Strathcona County Recreation, Parks and Culture is currently seeking motivated and engaged individuals to work as part of our dynamic winter operations team.
Labourer positions contribute to the conservation of municipal land, and the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational opportunities through the performance of manual labour and tasks.
As a Labourer I or II, you will contribute to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational opportunities through the performance of manual labour and tasks to support turf development and maintenance, outdoor premier areas and skating, horticulture and urban forestry, playground construction and maintenance within Strathcona County.
**Responsibilities**
- Perform manual tasks in all Outdoor Premier Area and Skating, including use of hand power tools and equipment (shovels, rakes, chippers, etc.)
- Learn the safe operation of small equipment (snow blowers, backpack blowers, string trimmers, push mowers, chainsaws, chippers, drills, backpack sprayers, etc.) to assist operators
- Operate trucks up to and including one ton trucks and trailers
- Follow safety guidelines to keep self and others safe on the work site
**Skills and Abilities**
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact in a professional manner that supports a positive work culture
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and to maintain concentration and alertness for extended periods of time
- Ability to use computers and technology
- Ability to adapt to new and changing situations, combined with initiative and responsibility
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of hand and power tools
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety, SDS and WHMIS regulations
- Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement weather
**Qualifications**
- Minimum Grade 10 education
- Minimum of one year driving experience
- Experience with the use of a variety of hand and power tools
- Previous experience as a labourer in landscaping, construction, forestry, greenhouse, playground, golf course, agricultural, skating ice construction/maintenance or irrigation practices would be considered an asset
- Experience operating small equipment would be considered an asset
- Current First Aid and CPR certification would be considered an asset
**Conditions of Employment**
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators License and submission of a Driver’s Abstract with less than seven demerits
- Submission of satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms), standing, bending, shovelling, etc.
- Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions
- Ability to work a variety of shift work
