- Research Assistant Opportunity in Honey Bee Health Science_

**Position**

The Rueppell lab is seeking to hire a highly motivated individual to assist with research projects related to developing new honey bee medications. Honey bees play an important role in pollination and agricultural ecosystems and various parasites and pathogens impact honey bee health. The aim of this research will be focused on assessing chemical compounds in their efficacy and safety to control parasitic Varroa mites, one of the most severe threats to honey bee health. This position is designed for a research assistant to help and collaborate with a senior scientist, Dr. Rassol Bahreini, at the Social Insect Lab (Dr. Olav Rueppell’s lab), Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta. This a time
- limited, casual position for six months from May 2024 to November 2024, with the possibility of a 2.5 year extension. Applications for a shorter contract will also be considered. Hourly salary will be contingent on qualifications but is estimated to range between $18 and $24 per hour for an average of 37.5h/week. Work hours are somewhat variable because they will be dictated by project needs and may include some weekend or evening work.

**Working for the Department/Faculty**

The Department of Biological Sciences conducts research and teaching about biology, all aspects of living things. The Department of Biological Sciences is the largest and one of the most diverse on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff.

**Location**

Work primarily takes place in Edmonton at the Crop Diversification Centre North (CDCN) (17507 Fort Road NW, Edmonton AB, T5Y 6H3) during the summer and fall, and in our main lab at the North Campus (Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2E9) during the rest of the year, with occasional work at our apiary at the South Campus of the University of Alberta. Although some ride-sharing may be arranged, independent mobility to get to these worksites is required.

**Responsibilities**

The selected applicant will be expected to assist all aspects of the laboratory and field research. In the laboratory, the assistant will help preparing experimental materials, setting up trials, assessing toxicity of compounds on mites and bees, and safely disposing of waste material (both chemical and biological) in the laboratory and field. Field duties include managing, feeding, treating, sampling, moving and inspecting honey bee colonies. The assistant will be expected to maintain and modify lab and field equipment. Also, the technician will assist in collecting samples from laboratory and field trails, recoding data, creating datasets, and providing reports.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- BS.C. in Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or equivalent.
- Ability to work in an outdoor apiary under strenuous conditions.
- Ability to lift heavy colony boxes (up to 20 kg).
- Must not be allergic to stinging insects, especially honey bees.
- Have a valid driver’s license and operating vehicle.
- Must be able to work with active ingredients of pesticides in a restricted lab, when wearing a full-face repository mask and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work professionally and safely in the laboratory and field.
- Willingness to work long hours under laboratory and field conditions.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Fine motor skills for manipulation of honey bees and diseases.

**Preferred Additional Qualifications**
- Experience with beekeeping and laboratory bioassay would be asset.
- Interest in learning molecular techniques, honey bee biology, technical skills, and beekeeping.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to keep a positive relationship with colleagues.
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
