**About the Group**

IPEP Group works closely with APS leadership, agency HR practitioners and the Government on public service employment policy, performance and integrity matters. It also provides corporate legal services and legal policy advice to the Commission.

**About the Role**

General Counsel is the head of the legal practice at the Commission and is responsible for overall leadership and management of the Commission’s legal risk, running a small in-house legal team supporting delivery of the Commission’s business outcomes and statutory obligations.

General Counsel is a key leadership position in the Group and the Commission, and a member of the Executive Committee. While the position reports to the Assistant Commissioner, Integrity, Performance and Employment Policy (IPEP) it occupies a role of independent, trusted advisor to the Australian Public Service Commissioner.

The Legal Services team operates in a fast-paced, dynamic central agency environment providing high-level strategic advice and support, overseeing a number of essential functions including:

- Providing in-house legal services for the Commission, the Merit Protection Commissioner, the Remuneration Tribunal and the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal on:

- statutory interpretation, legislation and legislative instrument development
- employment law and workplace relations
- commercial and procurement arrangements, including intellectual property and copyright
- investigations and inquiries in consultation with other APS agencies
- Freedom of Information, privacy
- litigation and dispute resolution
- corporate and HR matters
- Legal training
- procurement of external legal services.
- delivering outcomes through legal policy development and implementation
- leading and managing a small team of professionals
- managing, delivering and monitoring legal projects
- engaging effectively and collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior executives, other APS agencies, and members of the legal profession.
