**The opportunity**:
We are currently looking for a** VP Safety & Environment** to join our Corporate Safety & Environment team on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Electric Utilities, Canada & Caribbean, this position will lead a team of Environment and Safety professionals responsible for ensuring safety and the environment remain key areas of focus with leaders and employees throughout the business and is evident in Emera’s culture.

**Accountabilities**:
As Emera’s VP Safety & Environment you will:

- Partner with operational leaders, including contractor leaders, to ensure that Safety and Environment programs meet or exceed the needs of the business and are current with industry trends and regulations;
- Establish strong relationships with external stakeholders such as the Department of Labour, Workers’ Compensation Board and Electricity Canada;
- Ensure systems and metrics are in place to report on the status of all elements within the SMS, EMS and are being reviewed consistently;
- Serve as executive sponsor for development, delivery and reporting on related training;
- Take ownership for the assurance of each business to conduct investigations related to environmental and safety incidents, all non-compliance issues, and ensure the prompt conclusion of investigations through the completion of action items is administered within each business. Where applicable, the VP will ensure legal and other departments are adequately notified and involved in investigations;
- Prepare for and participate in Board of Director and Emera HSE Board Committee meetings as required;
- Work with leaders and Safety and Environment teams across the group of companies to establish annual goals and objectives and processes that ensure exemplary performance and compliance as well as promote quality management system practices of continuous improvement toward world-class performance in safety and industry leading environmental performance.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers, by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.

**Skills, Competencies and Experience**:

- Proven track record of building and sustaining safety and environment programs;
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or relevant experience;
- Executive leadership experience with strong executive presence and mindset;
- Experience creating or working within an effective Quality Management System;
- Knowledge of risk management principles and practices including assessing climate change-related risks and opportunities;
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skills with the ability to develop and oversee implementation of highly effective improvement plans;
- Strong critical and strategic thinking skills coupled with demonstrated problem solving skills;
- Ability to translate complex messages and recommendations into effective communications and action plans;
- Excellent relationship and influence management skills as a collaborative leader with the ability to build strong relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders;
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to inspire, motivate and mobilize a team and colleagues;
- Confidence, maturity, and credibility to interact with and present to senior business leaders;
- Resilience in adapting to evolving situations, plans and strategies;
- Able to thrive in fast paced and or uncertain and changing situations.
