Job Title: Youth & Family Counsellor (Quadra Elementary School - Temporary Position)

Reports to: Executive Director, Site Supervision from School Principal or Designate.

Role: The role of the Youth and Family Counsellor is to provide identification and intervention in the areas of counselling, skill development, advocacy, and support services to vulnerable children and their families. Children who are vulnerable are those who are experiencing familial, emotional, behavioural, and/or cultural issues which significantly limit their capacity to function effectively within their family, school, and/or community.

**Goals of the Youth and Family Counselling Services**
- Remain enrolled and connected with an educational program.
- Maintain, repair, and encourage healthy attachments to family and other significant adults.
- Develop healthy social relationships and positive self-worth.

**Key Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Assessing the individual needs of children/youth/family in the areas of family capacity, emotional stability, school functioning, peer relations, and community profile.
- Individual, group, and family counseling
- Life skill training which may include social skills development.
- Crisis management intervention.
- Conflict resolution and mediation skills
- Advocacy skills
- Outreach with children & families.
- Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of school administration, counselors, teachers, and other school staff.
- Preventive interventions (i.e., health promotion, mental health strategies, parenting, drug and alcohol education).
- Facilitating students’ transition to and connecting them to a new school or workplace.
- On-going consultation and liaison with administration, teaching staff and community professionals (integrated case management).

**Qualifications**:

- A degree in Child and Youth Care or Social work (or equivalent), with related experience working with vulnerable youth and their families.
- The means and ability to do outreach to students and families.
- Membership with the South Vancouver Island School-Based Youth & Family Counsellors Association
- Criminal Record and Abuse registry check

**Hours of Work**:

- This is a temporary position to cover a leave of absence: January 8th, 2024 - June 28th, 2024
- 21 hours weekly
- A schedule is under development spread across the hours of the 5 schools with 1-2 schools visited daily in a typical day

**Benefits and Remuneration**:

- $29.72 - $32.96 hourly, depending on years of equivalent school-based experience as reflected in the Quadra Village Community Centre Wage grid.
- Earned Vacation Time is applied to the school’s Winter and Spring break periods.
