**Role and Facility Information**:
The Saanich Peninsula Hospital's (SPH) department of Emergency Medicine is currently looking to hire Emergency Medicine Physicians, as well as a locums, for up to a total of 30 available shifts/month.

SPH is a 65 bed acute care community hospital with an 18 bed emergency department (ED) that cares for 31,000 patients/year, both pediatric and adult. SPH is the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands such that the total population served is approximately 87,000. The ED is staffed by a dedicated, progressive, collegial group of 16 full time and part time emergency physicians, currently scheduled over 5 shifts/day with 12 hours of double coverage. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care and Anesthesiology are available within the hospital during daytime hours, with numerous other Specialists in the community. Tertiary care support and consultants are 30 minutes away by road at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory services are 24/7, and Medical Imaging, including a CT scanner, operates 07:30 - 24:00 daily plus on call overnight. Physicians must be comfortable in a single coverage department without on site Respiratory Therapy or ICU support. Affiliation with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program provides regular teaching opportunities to medical students and residents within the ED.

Additional Information

Applicants must hold CCFP-EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine, and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

Located north of Victoria, the Saanich Peninsula is within the territories of the Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tsawout, Tseycum First Nations and made up of the municipalities of Central and North Saanich, and the City of Sidney. As of 2019, the population of the Saanich Peninsula Local Health Area was 70,356 and 20% identified as immigrants, 15% were age 75+, 9.8% were visible minorities, and 5.4% were Indigenous. The Saanich Peninsula offers a mixture of rural, urban and farming communities, with an extensive choice of outdoor recreational activities such as golfing, hiking, cycling, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, windsurfing, and fishing. It boasts a long shoreline with sandy beaches, is home of the world-famous Butchart Gardens, and has quick access to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal (to Vancouver) and the Victoria International Airport.
