The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM), is recruiting for a Physician Assistant to provide general medical care, under the supervision of a licensed physician, to patients admitted under this service. The Section of PHM provides comprehensive, tertiary inpatient acute and complex care to children in Southern Alberta, SE British Columbia and SW Saskatchewan; a catchment area of approximately 2.5 million people. PHM is a busy service that provides 24/7 inpatient coverage for approximately 80% of hospitalized medical patients. PHM provides consultation to subspecialty, surgical, and psychiatry inpatient services, and provide support to our regional partners across Southern Alberta. Staff Hospital Pediatricians at Alberta Children’s Hospital are currently responsible to lead any emergency resuscitation codes outside of the ER and ICU-units. PHM is a dynamic and diverse group of physicians who are very collaborative and enjoy mentoring, teaching learners, and working within a multidisciplinary team. **Description**:
The primary responsibility of the Physician Assistant (PA) is to provide comprehensive direct patient care, within their skill matrix, as a central member of the PHM team. You will be working alongside physicians, medical trainees, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians. The PA is responsible to perform comprehensive assessment, make differential diagnoses, order appropriate testing, and plan the clinical management of patients. The PA is expected to participate in inter-disciplinary collaboration in the provision of patient care. Only those demonstrating the strongest qualifications will be contacted for an interview.

The Physician Assistant is required to: Provide direct clinical care to patients and consult with and refer to other health care professionals as indicated. Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment. Instruct and educate patients. Confer with patients or family members to address any follow
- up care concerns. Fully document all aspects of patient care and assist with completion of all required documentation. Review clinical care in the light of evidence-based literature. Provide and document clinical instructions as required. Support discharge planning process as needed Deal regularly with community physicians, other health care providers, and community organizations to facilitate ongoing comprehensive patient care management. Ensure continuing education, training and development is undertaken to meet CAPA and patient care requirements. Work collaboratively with all health care providers, patients and families, to ensure continuity of care is maintained. Encourage and ensure good working relationships with all members of the team. In exceptional circumstances, provide additional services under the direction and supervision of a Physician, within the clinical competence of the PA. Work within AHS Policies and Procedures. Appropriate supervision and support are provided and a formal orientation and assessment period will be implemented.

**Preferred Qualifications**:
It is anticipated this will be a highly competitive job posting. Preference will be given to applicants who have recent experience in an acute care facility; specifically, those who have had specific experience within the last 3 years in acute care Pediatrics. Those with other experience in Pediatrics or adult acute care are also welcomed.
