**POSITION TITLE: PARKS & SPORTS FIELDS STUDENT**

**REPORTS TO**:ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR - PARKS & NATURAL ASSETS**

**CATEGORY: STUDENT - 40 HOURS/WEEK**

**EMPLOYMENT DATES: MAY 6, 2024- AUGUST 26, 2024 (16 WEEKS)**

The Parks and Sports fields students are an integral part of our Summer Parks operations. This position provides maintenance services to Township properties, including the Recreation Center, libraries, municipal offices, historic buildings and parks. As directed, this position will be required to perform weekly risk and hazard inspections of parks, sport fields and play spaces. Students will gain experience operating equipment and performing minor equipment maintenance. Day to day tasks include lawn cutting, garbage removal, and duties associated with landscaping and park/sports field maintenance. This position may also support the horticulture team with beautification services to Township parks, entrance features, assets, gardens and community driven projects.

**EDUCATION, SKILLS, TRAINING**:

- Minimum Grade 12 high school level education and enrolled in a full-time post
- secondary education program in the fall of 2024.
- Enrollment in a program related to turf maintenance or horticulture would be considered an asset
- Experience operating equipment such as a riding lawn mower, string trimmer, and other lawn maintenance tools
- Experience operating equipment and tools related to preparing, planting and maintaining of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs would be considered an asset
- Knowledge of risks or hazards that may exist within an outdoor recreation space
- Excellent communication skills
- Motivated, demonstrate initiative, and ability to work independently with minimum direction
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions as required
- Valid class “G2” driver’s license and a satisfactory driver’s record are required.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES**:

- Complete maintenance services to Township properties, including the Recreation
- Centre, libraries, municipal offices, historic buildings and parks.
- Perform weekly risk and hazard inspections of parks, sport fields and play spaces.
- Perform minor equipment maintenance.
- Operate equipment related to lawn cutting, weed removal and garbage removal
- Other duties associated with landscaping and maintaining Township parks/sports fields.
- Support the beautification services to Township parks, entrance features, assets, gardens and community driven projects.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
Frequent and regular outdoor work in various and changing weather conditions that include but is not limited to rain, hot and cool temperatures, and wind.

Work evenings, weekends, and additional hours beyond the normal working day as scheduled.

May be operating equipment for long periods (3-4 hours) without a break

Frequent moderate physical exertion and occasional heavy physical exertion, including lifting, digging, shoveling, raking and climbing ladders

Work may include locations with exposure to sensory elements including waste materials and smells.

**WORKING RELATIONSHIPS**:
Internal: Daily communication with Township employees

External: Occasional interaction with Township residents, visitors, and contractors
