Halifax, Canada Province of Nova Scotia Full time

**Department**:Public Service Commission

**Location**:HALIFAX

**Type of Employment**:Term

**Union Status**:Exclusion - Non Union - NSPG

**Closing Date**:2/3/2023 (Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time)

**About Us**:
As leaders in workplace psychological health and safety and in the ongoing sustainability of the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, the Public Service Commission and the Nova Scotia General Employees Union (NSGEU) have partnered to create an Office for Workplace Mental Health (the Office). The goal of the Office is to create a positive culture of mental health and wellness, help employees access the supports they need in a timely way, and help leaders and managers create equitable, safe, and supportive workplaces.

The Office of Workplace Mental Health has six pillars of work:

- Clarity: Communicate who we are, what we do and how we fit with current resources. Be visible to employees. Collect input from employees on the Office’s development.
- Literacy: Build mental health literacy in our workplaces. Provide training, resources and tips for mental health and well-being.
- Organizational Support: Provide strategic organizational support to proactively identify and address workplace factors.
- Targeted Support: Identify opportunities to provide targeted support to groups across the organization, including high-risk groups.
- Leadership: Strengthening the skills and knowledge of leaders so they can model healthy mental health behaviours, foster healthy relationships and support employees.
- Navigation: Connecting employees with appropriate services and resources to support their mental health and well-being.

**About Our Opportunity**:
The Office seeks to provide culturally responsive mental health resources within the provincial government. If you are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of employees requiring wellness supports, as well as being part of a team making strides towards addressing workplace mental health using an approach focused on addressing social injustice, preventing injury and illness, and promoting healthy environments, come and join us. You would be part of a team of nine that includes four navigators, reporting to the Director of the Office of Workplace Mental Health.

The role of the Navigator, Workplace Mental Health is to support employees and help them navigate their way to support positive mental health and well-being. The Navigator has knowledge of supports and services within the organization and in the community. They help employees consider options and find culturally appropriate supports and services, staying connected with employees during their mental health journey.

The Navigator also takes an active role in the promotion of workplace factors that support psychological health and safety in the workplace and advancing mental health literacy and programming.

**Primary Accountabilities**:

- Connecting with employees and managers and using communication techniques (e.g. Motivational Interviewing, reflective listening) to promote the employee’s self-advocacy and helping them articulate their challenges, priorities and/or goals using a person and relationship-focused approach.
- Providing employees with the best and most direct route for the resources that can assist with their inquiry. The support services may be internal to our organization or out in the community/health care system.
- Taking an active role in the development, implementation and management of mental health literacy that focuses on the wellness of Nova Scotians, through training, presentations, and consultations.
- Developing and fostering positive relationships with provincial government employees, mental health and wellness service providers and practitioners, and community organizations to achieve desired results with various groups and partners.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
This could be the right job for you if you have the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

- Post-secondary education along with several years of related life experience in the field of mental health. Life experiences may include having been a user of mental health services; supporting a family member or friend; and/or as service provider (e.g. Case manager, mental health practitioner, etc.).
- Exceptional communication skills including active listening and comprehension and note taking and documentation while maintaining confidentiality and privacy.
- Established relationships with various provincial mental health and other service-related providers/community partners, along with experience partnering and building positive relationships as demonstrated through the achievement of outcomes, including partner engagement and consultation processes.
- Proven ability to develop tools, resources and supports applicable to employees, managers and human resource professionals that foster the well-being of mental health in the workplace.
