**Summary of Function**

Under the supervision of the Building Services Manager, the Janitor provide the residents with a clean, safe environment, and assists in keeping the building neat and tidy, to provide a “home-like” environment. The Janitor provides quality housekeeping that meets the standards set out in the policies and procedures.

**Qualifications**
- Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent is preferred
- WHMIS certification

**Experience**
- Experience working with elderly
- Experience in customer service
- Experience as a janitor, or in housekeeping is considered an asset
- Experience working in nursing home or similar environment would be considered an asset

**Skills**
- Ability to understand oral and written directions
- Ability and available to work a variety of shifts days, evening, nights and weekends
- Effective communication skills (verbal, written)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Dependable, trustworthy, compassionate with good work habits
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs
- Ability to bend, sit, stand, kneel for short periods of time
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety as relates to job

**Responsibilities**
- Maintain a clean, safe, home - like environment
- Clean, dust and scrub or vacuum lounges, activity rooms, hallways and other common areas according to Policy and Procedures.
- Collect garbage from hallways, lounges and other areas and deposit in the designated area.
- Clean all common area washrooms according to Policy and Procedure.
- Keep housekeeping room clean and tidy. Order supplies according to the appropriate procedures.
- Clean rooms vacated by resident and/or prepare room for incoming resident as assigned.
- Use infection control policies and procedures for housekeeping
- Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Care_f_or policies and procedures
- Reports the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which he/she is aware and which may endanger him/herself or another worker
- Reports any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard
- Ensures all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and Care_f_or policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents
- Performing other duties/tasks as assigned by manager
