**_About the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU)_**:The DSU represents the collective voice of over 18,000 students in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The DSU advocates for student rights, builds community on campus through events, supports over 300 societies, and provides focused services to foster a supportive and positive student experience.

**Overview**
As Chief Returning Officer, you will be in charge of planning and overseeing DSU elections throughout the 2023-24 academic year. Working with the Elections Committee, you will ensure that elections are fair and democratic.

The Chief Returning Officer will develop skills in communication, planning, bylaw and policy interpretation, and meeting facilitation through both training and direct experience. These abilities are directly applicable to work in other organizations and sectors with elections processes, making this an exceptional opportunity for students interested in becoming public sector leaders, government and non-profit directors, policymakers, and public organizers.

The Chief Returning Officer is appointed by DSU Council and is directly supervised by the Policy and Governance Coordinator.

**Characteristics**

The successful applicant for this position will have:

- Demonstrated ability to delegate and lead in a team setting
- Excellent English-language speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Interest in elections, democratic processes, or governance structures
- Orientation to detail; previous experience working with policy an asset
- Previous involvement with the DSU or knowledge of its structures an asset
- Previous experience administering or working on elections an asset
- Knowledge of anti-oppressive principles and/or experience with anti-oppressive frameworks an asset

**Duties**

The Chief Returning Officer:

- Is the chief elections official for the DSU’s 2023-24 elections, both a fall by-election and winter general election
- Serves as Chair of the Elections Committee, including facilitating regular meetings during each election period and regularly collaborating on or delegating tasks
- Reviews charges of violations of elections policy and issues fines or warnings where appropriate
- Works with Union staff to coordinate promotion and advertisement of elections
- Submits a final report on their work during each election period
