Bosun

**Overview**: Supervising the deck ratings. Responsible for the planning of the deck maintenance and the preparation of the vessel for sea, confined waters passage, anchoring and docking operations.

**Key tasks & responsibilities**

**The Bosun is responsible to the Chief Officer **and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the Company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Chief Officer.
- Assisting in the planning and execution of maintenance and operational work tasks
- Instructing Able Seamen and Ordinary seamen in accordance with Company safety policy and quality standards
- Effectively performing assigned tasks in conformance with safe work procedures and in accordance with instructions given by the supervising officer.
- Ensuring that no work involving entry into confined spaces, hot work, working aloft, is undertaken without the prior approval of the Chief Officer.
- Ensuring that, when the work mentioned above is conducted, proper surveillance is in place at all times, risks and hazards have been evaluated and the working environment is secured.
- During cargo operations, responsible to the officer of the watch for maintaining the vessel securely moored and ensuring that work is conducted safely.
- Assisting in cargo operations (preparation of the cargo spaces for the next loading etc)

**Prerequisites**
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Possess a valid Canadian passport with an expiry date over six (6) months from the time of joining
- Possess a valid Transport Canada medical with a validity of six (6) months from the time of joining)
- Possess the required certification for the position held as per Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and the Manila 2010 amendments for a vessel operating in unlimited waters
- Possess a “designated security duties” certificate as per STCW regulation A-VI/6
- Obtain and hold an Enhanced Reliability security clearance. It is imperative to hold such security clearance as required by the Provision of Services contract between Federal Fleet Services and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, represented by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada
