Accountable to the Associate Head, Clinical Education and Director, Administration, the Director, PTRC is responsible for the oversight and leadership of the UBC Physical Therapy and Research Clinic (PTRC), ensuring the successful delivery of clinical care aligned with Departmental objectives related to student education, research and innovation. The position is responsible for achieving consistent quality standards, maximizing opportunities for student education, teaching, and engagement, revenue generation and supporting research and innovation in physical therapy.
The PTRC Director is supported in this role by the Manager, PTRC, for whom they are responsible for recruiting and managing in collaboration with the Director, Administration for the Department of Physical Therapy.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS:
As part of the commitment to provide innovative clinical placement opportunities, the Department of Physical Therapy operates the student-led Physical Therapy and Research Clinic (PTRC). The Department is a research-intensive unit with award winning faculty conducting state-of-the art healthcare research. The Department also provides the only provincial program for the education of entry-to-practice Physical Therapists, as well as graduate rehabilitation programs. Through rigorous scholarly activity, high standards of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, the Department provides leadership for the profession of Physical Therapy.
ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership:
- Works with the Director of Administration and Associate Head, Clinical Education to develop and execute short
- and long-term initiatives and operational plans to achieve strategic planning goals.
- Works with the Clinic Manager, PTRC to develop and execute a balance neutral business and operating plan for the clinic.
- Identifies strategic opportunities to maintain a diverse and steady stream of patients suitable to the skill levels of the clinical preceptors and students.
- Promotes the positive perception of the PTRC amongst clinicians, staff, the University, and the community through effective communication strategies.
- Collaborates with other UBC Physical Therapy Clinic Directors or other Clinic Directors on departmental or inter-departmental work, projects, programs, and communications as directed by the Associate Head, Clinical Education or designate.
Clinic Management:
- Work with the Clinic Manager to oversee day-to-day operations of the PTRC.
- Leads regular clinic meetings with the support of the Clinic Manager, PTRC.
- Develops and implements clinical policies and procedures for the clinic, ensuring adherence at all times.
- Provides regular updates to the Associate Head, Clinical Education on the performance and outcomes of the clinic.
- Works with the Department, through the Associate Head, Clinical Education and Director of Administration to support the planning for infrastructure and equipment needs and facilities and space planning.
Staff Management:
- Works with the Director of Administration to hire, onboard, performance manage and develop the Clinic Manager.
- Provides leadership and direction for staff that supports the achievement of required outcomes.
- Supports the Clinic Manager, PTRC in the effective performance management of physiotherapy staff through both formal performance appraisals and informal methods such as regular feedback, coaching, and one-on-one conversations.
- Creates and maintains positive working relationships within the clinic by establishing a clear set of policies and procedures that align with the clinic’s mission and UBC’s strategic plan to help students create clear paths to success.
- Escalates issues when necessary to the Associate Head, Clinical Education or Director of Administration.
- Supports engagement and well-being among staff and clinicians through effective feedback, retention strategies, and work practices that support work-life balance.
Clinical Leadership:
- Provides clinical leadership and oversight to the PTRC, and its physiotherapists ensuring the clinic provides quality care for patients and a sufficient quality and number of clinical placements for MPT students (including international and/or out-of-province students as appropriate).
- Communicates with all staff and students regarding clinic protocols and patient/client care issues.
- Responds to complex inquiries or concerns from patients/clients, staff, and students and works to resolve issues.
