Sheet Metal Technician

The Sheet Metal Technician fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, fans, and furnace casings. Work may involve any of the following: setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal; operating soldering and welding equipment to join sheet metal parts; or inspecting, assembling, and smoothing seams and joints of burred surfaces.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
1. Determine project requirements, including scope, assembly sequences, and required methods and materials, according to blueprints, drawings, and written or verbal instructions.
2. Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on material, such as roofing panels, according to drawings or templates, using calculators, scribes, dividers, squares, and rulers.
3. Fasten seams or joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, or bonds to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items.
4. Install assemblies, such as flashing, pipes, tubes, heating and air conditioning ducts, furnace casings, rain gutters, or downspouts in supportive frameworks.
5. Convert blueprints into shop drawings to be followed in the construction or assembly of sheet metal products.
6. Fabricate or alter parts at construction sites, using shears, hammers, punches, or drills.
7. Select gauges or types of sheet metal or non-metallic material, according to product specifications.
8. Maneuver completed units into position for installation and anchor the units.
9. Transport prefabricated parts to construction sites for assembly and installation.
10. Drill and punch holes in metal, for screws, bolts, and rivets.
11. Provide direction to the labourer-helper/apprentice
12. Takes responsibility for the safety and quality of work provided by the labourer-helper/apprentice
13. Upon completion of tasks, checks installation for any deficiencies and or leaks etc.
14. Completes paperwork daily, including work orders and timesheets.
15. Responsible to call back to office when job is complete prior to leaving job site.
16. Completes installations and uses materials cost effectively for the company
17. Responsible for planning work day to maximize both time and materials
18. Responsible for company tools and the correct use of tools. Reports any tools that are in need to repair to the warehouse or the appropriate person
19. Responsible for the overall appearance of truck and if the truck needs to be filled with gas it is done at the end of the day.
**JOB SPECIFICATIONS**
**1.** **EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
Minimum grade 12 education and complete Red Seal Sheet Metal License
Minimum 5-10 years of hands-on experience (including apprenticeship) as sheet metal worker
**2.** **KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
Strong mechanical understanding and exceptional mathematical/numerical skills are required. Must have excellent organizational, time and materials management, and foresight. Incumbent must work well as a team member and have good verbal and written communication skills.
**3.** **LEVEL OF DIRECTION RECEIVED**
The incumbent will receive little daily direction; however, the Project Manager will provide direction and parameters surrounding project work.
