**Position Summary**:
The Financial Analyst, Research is responsible for performing a variety of complex financial reporting duties related to managing the research funding held in trust by the University. The funding is from external agencies, foundations, research institutes, private sector companies and donations.

**Accountabilities**:

**Financial Management & Reporting**
- Perform routine to complex financial and accounting duties, including processing and approving financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and integrity of related data in the financial system, completing budget-to-actual expense analyses and reconciliations, and preparing financial reports and forecasts for submission to funding agencies;
- Review and interpret funding agreements’ terms and conditions to ensure eligibility of financial transactions and overall compliance;
- Prepare invoices to funding agencies and monitor aging to ensure accounts are collectible;
- Prepare inter-institutional transfer and/or invoicing agreements, ensuring compliant with funding agencies’ guidelines.

**Advising**
- Determine requirements to ensure optimal client service delivery to the research community, providing appropriate guidance and advice to the research community on financial systems, university and/or granting agency policies and procedures.

**Analyzing**
- Make independent decisions on best alternatives or solutions to a given problem, taking into consideration the risks and benefits of each;
- Monitor project spending, end dates and reporting deadlines and notify researchers of approaching deadlines

**Training**
- Advise and train researchers and others on financial matters, funding agencies’ guidelines, financial terminology, standard accounting practices and Laurier financial systems and expense forms.

**Other**
- Provide functional guidance to staff members, sharing knowledge of funding agencies’ terms, conditions and guidelines and eligibility of expenditures;
- Provide research compliance oversight;
- Make recommendations for changes and improvements, understanding risk and impact to the department or university.

**Qualifications**:

- University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field
- CPA Designation or working towards considered an asset
- Minimum of 5 years’ related experience, preferably in a large organization or university
- Advanced spreadsheet skills (Excel) and knowledge of other MS Office products (Work and PowerPoint) and ERP systems
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy while managing a high volume of work to meet deadlines
- Ability to continually manage multiple competing demands, priorities and deadlines in a demanding environment
- Sound judgement and sharp problem-solving and analytical skills to identify issues and seek creative solutions
- Client service focused, with an aptitude to develop positive working relationships with stakeholders
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with individuals at all levels, internal and external to the University
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, service driven environment
- Sound knowledge of internal controls and auditing principles
