Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Analyst

Internship -Temporary, Full-time

Nature of the Position

The District of Sechelt lies at the heart of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast. The community is highly vulnerable to climate change, because of its elevation at sea level between Sechelt Inlet and the Strait of Georgia. Rising sea levels, king tides, windstorms, and consecutive years of drought are some of the real time climate change issues the District is grappling with.
In partnership with the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), the District is offering an internship opportunity for an eligible student to review the District’s practices, policies, bylaws, and regulations through the lens of climate change adaptation. The objective of this role is to conduct a comprehensive review of the District’s bylaws, analyze modern-day climate solutions and recommend an action plan that leverages the municipality’s regulatory framework. The student will experience the complexities of navigating climate change from the public administration perspective and have the opportunity to engage with multiple stakeholders as a representative of the local government.

The ability to organize and schedule work independently, work with mínimal supervision, and conduct detailed research are critical competencies. Strong technical writing skills will be required for success in this position. The capability to establish working relationships with District of Sechelt stakeholders (both within the organization and outside the organization) will be important to accomplish the goals of the position.

Working Conditions

This is a temporary, full-time, unionized position within the BCGEU, with an expected duration of 13 weeks. The wage for the position is $24 per hour plus 9.8% of straight time pay in lieu of scheduled vacations, paid holidays, health and welfare benefits and other paid leave. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The District supports employment equity in accordance with the conditions of the Human Rights Code of BC.
