A thesis research position is available for a highly motivated Master's student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Windsor to work as part of an dynamic team on an industrially-funded projected sponsored by Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC). The project title is, "Design Stage Assessment of Fan Inlet Distortion Response: Operability and Aeromechanical Impacts."

The successful applicant will join existing Master's and PhD students on the project.

For fans at the front of jet engines, there is a lower flow rate limit at any given rotational speed below which the aerodynamic flow field breaks down and the fan enters a regime called rotating stall, where pressure rise capability is dramatically reduced. A fan’s stall margin is essentially the difference in flow rate between the intended operating condition (design point) and the stall point and indicates the degree to which operation can deviate from design intent safely. Jet engines must operate at times with inlet flow distortion, where the inflow velocity varies over the fan inlet area. This can lead to stall occurring at higher overall flow rates.

In this project, stall prediction methods are a focus but they require supporting data from a new experimental fan rig. The focus of the work for this position is design, fabrication, commissioning, and data collection for an add-on to a low speed fan (LSF) experimental rig to enable ground vortex ingestion (GVI) distortion capabilities. This will involve designing a simulator for near-ground or near-fuselage effects which lead to vortex ingestion into jet-engine-style fans. Work will include design of this capability along with addition of relevant instrumentation to the rig. The student will work closely with P&WC staff on the rig design to ensure best practices are followed. Literature will be reviewed to determine the appropriate range of nacelle to “ground” distances (normalized by fan diameter) which need to be reproduced in the rig. Work includes detailed design of all parts, including producing drawings with appropriate tolerances, and carrying out stress and vibration analysis. The rig assembly procedure will also be specified. The design will be carried out in CAD software.

Once the rig add-on is assembled, initial commissioning will be carried out to ensure safe and effective operation, followed by a measurement campaign.

**Expected outcomes**:
Contribution to a final project report is required, covering LSF rig add-on design (for GVI distortion) and presenting aerodynamic data from measurements for GVI distortions. In addition, a thesis and a Q1-level journal paper (e.g. ASME Journal of Turbomachinery) covering the thesis outputs are also expected. The latter may start as an international-level conference paper (e.g. ASME Turbo Expo) which is then recommended for journal inclusion. The ability to communicate effectively in English is therefore essential.

**Placement of the position**:

- An earned (or expected, prior to September 2024) undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Aerospace Engineering
- Excellent command of English
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in a multicultural setting
