This STPFFA position, under the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief and the technical direction and guidance of the on-duty Platoon Chief, receives emergency calls, day-to-day calls, dispatches staff and equipment utilizing manual or computer-aided dispatching systems. Operates the telephone communications system, directs calls to appropriate personnel. Provides clerical support to the Chief, Deputy Chief, and Fire Suppression service areas.

**MAJOR TASKS**:
Receives and directs all internal and external emergency and non-emergency communication,including telephone, text communication, radio, and scanner communications.

Records information on emergency calls and verifies details for accuracy and clarification.

Pages and/or dispatches the appropriate resources for the City of St. Thomas Fire Department inaccordance with Departmental policies and procedures.

Maintains ongoing radio contact at all emergencies, arranges necessary support services, notifies andliaises with other appropriate agencies as well as Fire Prevention, and obtains technical informationwhen requested.

In a major emergency situation, initiates various call-in procedures as set out in the Departmentaland Corporate policies, ensuring that an adequate number of personnel are dispatched to theemergency scene. This requires ongoing liaison with the Incident Commander.

Closely monitors radios, scanners, phones and any other communication device and notifies SeniorOfficers and other Personnel of any emergencies or equipment malfunctions.

Maintains all dispatch equipment in operating condition, ensuring proper operational performance inaddressing all emergency and non-emergency situations. Conducts equipment testing in accordancewith departmental procedures and practices, reporting concerns to the Platoon Chief.

Monitors the St Thomas Elgin General Hospital system, and is responsible to log activity and ensureappropriate personnel are made aware of activity.

Monitors the movement of departmental vehicles, logs time of activity, arrival times and return timesin log book and on fire reports.

Completes appropriate dispatch record narratives and details for every Fire Department call and activity.

Inputs fire response data into a computerized records management system.

Updates manual and computerized databases for key holders. Informs Fire Prevention of any and all changes to key holders. Keeps accurate lists of key holder information and assists with the creation and inputting of pre-fire planning information

Performs clerical duties for Fire Suppression and Administration when required.

Provides after hours answering services and 24 hour paging services for various City agencies including Public Works, Arenas, Parks and Recreation, Airport, Animal Control, Maintenance, and Pollution Control.

Works in close cooperation with members of the Fire Department Operations Division and maintains acollaborative work environment.

Maintains confidentiality of any and all information acquired.

Provides excellent customer service and provides appropriate information when receiving and answering routine inquiries from staff, visitors and agencies. Applies diffusing techniques when communicating with excited or irate callers.

Liaises with other agencies and organizations within both emergency and non-emergency settings and provides the appropriate notifications as necessary.

Complies with all legislation related to the Fire Department Emergency Communications Centre (ECC), fire department and corporate policies, procedures and guidelines related to ECC, including NFPA1221 standards and fire department key performance indicators.

Accesses data from the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) software and the Records Management System (RMS) as required and creates and writes reports as requested.

Activates mutual aid and automatic aid protocols when requested.

Maintains knowledge of the location of key streets and roadways within the City of St. Thomas andthe immediate surrounding area.

Keeps an accurate record of road closures and then transfers the information to the appropriate fire station.

Receives telephone calls from staff related to attendance, bereavement and other leaves of absence and then processes the information.

Participates in and assists with orientation and familiarization duties and activities including mock emergency scenarios for the purpose of training and exercising staff.

Attends and participates in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing sessions and other on-duty meetings, as requested.
