Manulife Group Benefits has an impressive market share in Mid-Market business. Growth and client retention in this market segment requires innovative thinkers who can develop solutions that balance customer need with organizational capabilities.

Our Waterloo, Group Benefits office, has an immediate opportunity for a Mid-Market Underwriter on the Renewal Team.

The Underwriter will experience interdependence with a strong team of professionals and opportunities both to learn from seasoned Underwriters and to mentor more junior staff. You will be mainly responsible for analyzing group characteristics, benefits, and plan design to appropriately price and retain new and existing business.

**Responsibilities**
- Analyze industry, demographics, benefit offerings and claiming patterns to establish rates and retentions for new and existing Group Benefit plans ensuring that the appropriate client retention and target profitability levels are achieved
- Provide internal account management to proactively manage and/or respond to client requests relating to pricing and benefit changes
- Provide value added underwriting and benefit recommendations to maximize the clients' group benefit spend
- Engage Group Benefit business internal partners as needed to resolve client requests and issues
- Actively participating in Group Benefit and Underwriting process and product improvement initiatives

**What we are looking for**
- Ability to make well-balanced decisions that take effective risk management, and customer needs into account
- Ability to communicate financial concepts, analysis and results in a clear, concise, easy to understand manner (written and verbal) including the ability to interact with representatives from other Divisions and Sales Teams
- Strategic and creative problem solver focused on finding solutions to unique customer needs
- Confident and expert negotiator with proven track record of building relationships and influence decision making
- Clear and effective written and oral communication skills with all types and levels of internal and external clients
- Persuasive communicator with an ability to clearly articulate ideas and present information within various levels of the organization
- Motivated self-starter and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Strong understanding of the Group Insurance market, products and services
- Strong understanding of financial arrangements (ASO and Retention accounting)
- Risk management expertise with demonstrated work related Underwriting experience within Group Benefits
- Bilingualism, French and English, is preferred
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills
- CEBS, GBA certification is encouraged and recommended
