**Cultural Coordinator**

**Position: CULTURAL COORDINATOR**

**Location**:Kenora/Fort Frances/Dryden/Atikokan

**Status**:Part-Time, fixed term contract (one-year) position with possibility of moving to Full-Time and an extension

**Closing Date**:November 4, 2024

Northwestern Ontario Métis Child and Family Services is a non-profit agency providing culturally safe support services for children, youth, families, and elders using a Wholistic Service Delivery Model (WSDM).

**General Description**:
Reporting to the Program Supervisor, the Cultural Coordinator will mentor and guide the Agency, and staff through direct and indirect cultural services. The Cultural Coordinator will enhance and develop Métis cultural service practices at NWOMCFS and promote the preservation of Métis heritage.

**Responsibilities**:
The Cultural Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, development, and delivery of Métis cultural practices and programming in consultation with Métis Elders and cultural practitioners to facilitate preservation and promotion of traditional practices. The Cultural Coordinator is responsible for the enhancement of positive and strong cultural identity for NWOMCFS service users. The Cultural Coordinator will be responsible for consultations, delivery of educational and training sessions to NWOMCFS staff, communities and external partners regarding Métis cultural values, beliefs, traditions and perspectives on individual, family and community life. The Cultural Coordinator provides consultation to staff to develop client assessments and plans which adequately and appropriately incorporate cultural aspects into service delivery.

**Qualifications**:

- Post Secondary Education in indigenous studies, social work or sociology
- Minimum three years experience delivering Métis cultural programming for children and their families
- A combination of related education, experience and skills may be considered
- Métis ancestry and demonstrated knowledge of Métis culture, history, traditions, and values is preferred
- Experience working with Indigenous agencies and Indigenous programs

**Requirements**:

- Knowledge of NWOMCFS vision and mission, structure, and programs
- Ability to be a strong advocate for Métis people
- Ability to guide and support individuals across the lifespan in their desires and efforts to embrace cultural values and traditions
- Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft office and virtual meeting platforms
- Ability to use good judgement in assessing difficult situations
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to build relationships with community partners
- Knowledge of Métis service delivery, customs, and traditions in relation to child well-being
- Strong cultural and facilitation skills
- Demonstrates strong verbal and written skills, and an ability to community effectively with all levels of the agency as well as external partners
- Respect, sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding towards Métis culture and traditions
- Excellent time management, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated sensitivity to client issues and understanding of importance of diplomacy and confidentiality
- Ability to speak Michif is an asset
- Must provide a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Must possess a Class G Ontario Driver’s License, have access to a vehicle, willing to travel, and provide a three-year uncertified Driver’s Abstract

**Compensation**:$61,968 - $76,000 per annum

**Working Conditions**:
The Cultural Coordinator will work during standard office hours with some evenings and weekends required. This position functions in a normal office environment with extended periods of sitting using typical office equipment. There are no unusual physical demands. The noise level can be moderate to high. The position may expose the Cultural Coordinator to high levels of tension and there may be some challenging contacts or situations. Given the traditional practices of Indigenous people, from time-to-time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines; tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar, may also occur.
