The Animal Care and Control Centre houses 6000 animals per year in a variety of species. Veterinary Medical Assistants (VMAs) play a pivotal role in the veterinary team, providing support to Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs), Veterinarians and Kennel Care Attendants.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

- Assist in maintaining and initiating orders of, supplements, vaccines and other related supplies
- Prepare the transfer information to EHS from the lists of approved animals to be transferred
- Ensure that when animals leave the facility, they are booked out of the shelter management system
- Check the animals that are being held under APA to ensure they are cleared to leave in a timely fashion
- Enter enrichment documentation for each animal that receives enrichment
- Scan and upload all documents related to animals in care onto the animals medical file on shelter buddy
- Liaise with stakeholders to find placements for the animals in care
- Enter all the microchip information onto their database to ensure animals can be reunited with their owners should they get lost
- Assist the RVTs with data entry during intake exams
- Assist the RVTs with administering treatments under the direction of the Veterinarian
- Assist with the exercising and socialisation of the animals in care
- Assist the RVTs in transferring animals to the treatment ward for surgery
- Assist the RVTs in cleaning after surgical procedures, washing, wrapping and sterilising instrument packs
- Assist with the general cleaning of animal areas
- Assist with cleaning of the medical areas
- Assist the RVTs and DVMs with restraining of animals
- Assist with identification, showing and releasing of animals

**Qualifications**:

- Completion of a Veterinary Medical Assistant Certificate
- Minimum of 2 years of diversified office and word processing experience that includes strong customer service, helping customers in difficult situations with tact and compassion (i.e., grieving pet loss); and conflict resolution
- Experience working as a Veterinary Medical Assistant and/or experience working in an animal shelter environment is an asset
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills
- Skilled in reading dog/cat language
- Sustained exposure to a variety of species with no allergic reactions
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Excellent data entry skills are required
- Demonstrated ability to utilize various computer software systems with ease including Shelter Buddy
- Previous experience and proficiency in animal handling of a variety species of animals including cats, dogs, small pets, reptiles, etc.
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance including a Vulnerable Sector check that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement

**Hours of Work**:40 hours per week. The Animal Care & Control Centre is open 7 days a week, 8 AM - 6:30 PM including weekends. Evening and weekend work is required.
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance._

**Salary**:$22.361 - $27.765 (Hourly); $46,689.770 - $57,973.320 (Annually)
