Job Summary
A full-time analytical chemist is available in the lab of Dr. Hill, faculty in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada).
This is a one-year contract with the possibility of extension.
The expected start date is January 1, 2025.

Organizational Status
Research in the Hill Lab focuses on the development and utilization of ‘omics in the areas of biomarker discovery, validation, and translation into human or animal clinics. The Hill Lab specializes in metabolomics and transcriptomic approaches. Application areas are diverse, from respiratory infection diagnostic development to bioactive molecule discovery in plants. Trainees from the Hill Lab engage in a rich, diverse training environment with excellent, ambitious peers from biology, chemistry, informatics, engineering, and medicine, who are pushing new boundaries in the diagnostic field. Entrepreneurial opportunities are also available. Trainees from the Hill Lab are highly competitive for academic, industry, and government positions.

Work Performed- Manage and maintain analytical and extraction instruments within a cutting-edge metabolomics facility, ensuring these instruments support advanced experimental methodologies and industry standards.- Develop and optimize complex sample collection and analysis protocols for research projects, delivering high reproducibility and accuracy and contributing to the facility's role as a leading research service provider.- Train and supervise junior lab members, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, in specialized techniques and instrument use, guiding them in experiment design and data interpretation to meet high standards for publishable results.- Generate high-quality, publishable data within project timelines through advanced experimental techniques, contributing to significant research findings and collaborations.- Consult with internal and external researchers, providing technical expertise in metabolomics techniques, interpretation of complex data, and refinement of experimental methods to support collaborative research.- Support the development and international reputation of the metabolomics facility, enhancing capabilities for innovative research and fostering partnerships with leading research institutions.

Wide latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment in the performance of specialized duties and responsibilities.

Works independently under administrative direction.

May be required to provide direction to other staff members; oversee the academic work of and demonstrate techniques to students as required.

Minimum Qualifications
University degree in relevant discipline or completion of a technical program and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications- Over 5 years of experience in analytical chemistry, specializing in chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques, with proven ability in instrument repair and maintenance.-
- Proven research contributions with at least 8 peer-reviewed articles as the first author.- Strong communication skills for effectively presenting complex data and methodologies to a variety of audiences.- Self-motivated with a keen interest in biomarker discovery and validation.- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a research team.- Passion for research in human or animal disease or plant sciences, with experience in untargeted molecule identification and verification.
