Firefighter / Paramedic

Permanent, Full-Time Position (up to 8) - averaging 42 hours per week

Pay Range: as per Local IAFF 4739 Collective Bargaining Agreement

What is the opportunity?

Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Operations via the chain of command, each Firefighter / Paramedic in the City of Leduc plays a key role in creating, maintaining, and improving public safety in the community. You will be part of a team of men and women that train, prepare equipment, and respond to emergencies both on fire apparatus and ambulances. You will end each shift knowing your interactions with the citizens we serve contributed to safety for all.

Whether you are fighting a house fire, assisting a diabetic patient, or speaking to and educating children during a tour of the Fire House, you maintain high standards of integrity, honesty and relationship building. You lead by example, work well in a team environment, and can stay calm under pressure during emergency events.

You have experience working with and enjoy interacting with the public. You take pride in your work by being up to date on leading practices in paramedicine and firefighting, and put a high priority on safety for yourself, your coworkers, and the public at large. Your exceptional communication skills equip you to instill calm in others at stressful emergency events and to convey your messages in a clear and concise manner.

You take a special interest in staying fit, both physically and mentally. You are aware of others’ health and wellness and look out for the members of your team. You enjoy working in a psychologically safe workspace and strive for personal growth in knowledge and career development.

What will you do?
- Respond to emergency calls, working as part of a team, use firefighting and rescue equipment to mitigate emergency events.
- Respond to medical emergencies in an ambulance as a paramedic.
- Work a repeating schedule of - 24 hr. shift / 24 hr. off / 24 hr. shift / 5 days off.
- Participate in on-duty and off-duty training.
- Perform general station duties and vehicle/equipment checks and maintenance.
- Responsible for workplace safety including physical and psychologically safe workplace.
- Be willing to make appropriate decisions and actions in emergent situations, while adhering to policy and procedures set out by the City of Leduc Fire Services.

What do you need to succeed?
- Registered and in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics at the Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) level.
- Valid Alberta Class 4 driver’s license with less than six demerits. A valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license and Air Brake (Q) endorsement will be required within one (1) year of hiring.
- Minimum Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent.
- Successful applicants will become a member of IAFF Local 4739.
- Successfully complete the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 - Level 1 training course offered by the City of Leduc. This training will commence immediately after accepting an offer of employment.
- Possess strong interpersonal communications skills, dealing with the public in a controlled, polite, respectful manner.

Preferred:

- Registered ACP is preferred.
- PCPs that have commenced an ACP program will be considered.
- PCPs must be willing to obtain ACP certification within 3 years of hiring. (financial support for ACP school is available)

Hiring Process (tentative dates):

- Written aptitude test - week of March 18
- Medical skills assessment (written and practical) - April 1 to 5
- Physical fitness test:

- Administered at Leduc Recreation Centre - April 6 to 19. (test details can be found at- )
- Applicants that have proof of successfully passing the U of A Firefighter Fitness Test in the last 6 months will be considered to have passed the physical test
- Applicants must participate in a 5-hour ride along with Leduc Fire Service - March 18 - April 19
- Interview - April 22 to May 3
