**POSITION DETAILS**:
TITLE: Fire Inspection / Training Officer
DEPARTMENT: Protective Services
CURRENT RATE OF PAY: $44.94 per hour
HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours per week, 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
1:00pm to 9:00pm Tuesdays

**GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES**:
The incumbent shall be responsible to the Director of Protective Services for the coordination and maintenance of the City’s Fire Prevention Program, inspections and fire investigations, training and other duties as required.

**SUPERVISION**:
The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Director of Protective Services.

**MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Plans, organizing, and directs the Fire Prevention Program of the Protective Services Department
- Prepares reports and maintains records and information for the Fire Prevention Program
- Represents the B.C. Fire Commissioners Office as a Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner and is responsible to the Director of Protective Services for the planning and execution of an effective fire prevention and inspection program, as well as enforcement of applicable bylaws, codes and standards.
- Primary function is fire inspections and investigations, will also be required to conduct fire training.
- May be required to command and control emergency scenes in the absence of the Fire Chief.
- Deals with the public and contractors, engineers, and architects on fire prevention and protection matters and maintains appropriate contacts with other fire service and professional organizations.
- Conducts pre-fire planning and investigates hazardous situations and complaints including development and maintenance of a data base and contacts in the community.
- Assists in fire investigations as directed by the Director of Protective Services to determine the origin and cause of the fire, gather and secure evidence, maintain records, partner with law enforcement agencies, Crown Council as and when necessary, and give evidence in court when required.
- Maintains liaison with other government departments such as the Building Inspector, Public Services, Fire Commissioners Office, Police Department, and other Provincial Agencies.
- Assists the Fire Chief in directing tactical operations at fires and other emergency situations.
- Assists in training of fire department personnel.
- Keeps an inventory of all equipment and fire fighting supplies and performs some routine maintenance on equipment, apparatus and the fire hall. Conducts investigation and report’s recommendations of damaged, missing, and replacement of assets
- Other related duties as required

**QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE**:

- Minimum Grade 12 education
- Must possess a National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A) 1001, Fire Fighter II, Certification or equivalency
- Must possess a Fire Inspector Level I Certification, through the Justice Institute of B.C. Fire Academy or possess an equivalent certification
- Must have successfully completed the BC Fire Code Course from the Justice Institute of BC.
- Must possess a Fire Service Instructor Level II Certification, through the Justice Institute of B.
