**Position Description**:
We are recruiting a Machine Learning Specialist (MLS) for an exciting opportunity at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at the Hospital for Sick Children to carry out research study operations that will support world-class fundamental and pre-clinical research at SickKids. The MLS will work closely with the Principal Investigator to deliver state-of-the-art, high impact computational resources for the biomedical research community through the BioGRID database, which is the largest and most widely used international resource for expertly curated biological interaction data. The MLS will conceptualize, model, and design new database features, with a focus on machine learning-guided data curation and a major renewal of the database architecture. The MLS will maximize the impact of BioGRID through direction of a large international team of researchers to disseminate BioGRID data and integrate operations across different biomedical resources that rely on the BioGRID as a primary data provider.

**Responsibilities**:

- Analyze requirements and architect complex database management systems for both relational database systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL systems (ElasticSearch, Apache Lucene, DynamoDB)
- Maintain and update the comprehensive BioGRID gene annotation sub-database, which currently encompasses >250,000,000 records
- Ensure that the public BioGRID portal is active on a 24/7 basis and ensure appropriate cybersecurity measures are in place
- Direct members and collaborators of the BioGRID software development team
- Attend and present at international meetings on data curation

Qualifications:

- BSc/BA in computer science
- 15+ years in user interface design, front-end programming, back-end programming, software engineering architecture, machine learning, networking and frameworks including JS, HTML, jQuery, Vue, TypeScript, CSS, Python, PHP, SQL, and Java
- 15+ years in database management systems (MySQL, NoSQL, Elasticsearch), the systems used to deploy the databases (Linux, Apache, Apache Lucene, Perl/PHP/Python), and scripting languages to capture external resources (Python, PHP, JavaScript)
- Track record of successful project management in bioinformatics resources
- Knowledge of fundamental principles of biological systems and bioinformatics
- Deep knowledge of public-facing web-based resources including cybersecurity
- Critical analytical skills and strong problem-solving abilities
- Extensive hands-on experience and track record in directly supervising large teams on complex bioinformatics and biomedical resource projects
- Enthusiasm for collaborative projects and ability to work well under pressure
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
