**About Us**:
The Sustainability and Applied Science Division’s Environmental Health and Food Safety Branch leads the Province’s strategic approach to manage risk to public health in the food continuum and other areas of environmental public health programming.

Under the oversight of the Director, Environmental Health and Food Safety Programs (EHFS), the Branch is responsible to lead, advise, and develop management strategies to minimize risk to public health arising from food-related hazards. The Branch manages the design and function of outcome-oriented, evidence-based programs to address food safety risks. The Sustainability and Applied Science Division’s Environmental Health and Food Safety Branch leads the Province’s strategic approach to manage risk to public health in the food continuum and other areas of environmental public health programming.

**About Our Opportunity**:
As the Manager of Food Safety Programs, you will work with a team of dedicated staff to develop strategies and programs to implement effective approaches to address health threats associated with food safety, proportional to risk.

You will support the Department under the terms of the NS Health Protection Act by managing programs that regulate food establishments. This position also supports the Director in decision-making and the effective management of food safety issues through the provision of timely, accurate intelligence and evidence-based advice and appropriate consultation and communication to stakeholders.

**Primary Accountabilities**:

- Ensure the effective management of human and financial resources
- Develop provincial government's food safety strategies and programs
- Support the Director in decision making and the effective management of food safety issues
- Support the province's legislative agenda as it pertains to food safety
- Ensure the Department is forward-looking in its food safety policies, strategies and legislative / regulatory agendas
- Minimize risks associated to public health associated with foodborne disease outbreaks
- Ensure that decisions which may affect food producers, retailers, eating establishments and the agriculture sector are made with an awareness of potential impacts
- Effectively support the inspection, compliance and enforcement elements of the Department
- Ensure the province's interest with public health and food safety are represented in dealings with the federal and other provincial governments
- Support focus, strategic alignment and continuity of the province’s efforts in Food Safety
- Supports the Administrator under the terms of the Health Protection Act Part II

**Qualifications and Experience**:
You have a bachelor’s degree in a related field (science or public health) as well as some progressive experience or an acceptable equivalent of education and relevant experience in the field. and relevant experience in the field. Experience in a supervisory or managerial role, graduate level education, and a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) is considered an asset.

You will be well organized and capable of prioritizing and delegating high volumes of work as well as exercising sound judgement under pressure. You possess a high degree of problem-solving skills and strong interpersonal skills. You have superior organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated decisiveness, and the ability to manage competing priorities with tight and conflicting deadlines.

**Working Conditions**:

- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day

**Additional Information**:
This is a term employment opportunity with anticipated end date of **May 12, 2025**.

While the position is based in Halifax, travel throughout the province will be required periodically.
