The Indigenous Youth Wellness Consultant will provide consultation, assessment and patient facing care to Indigenous children and youth experiencing mental health challenges, coordinate care with local practitioners and make recommendations and/or referrals to culturally-appropriate services. This role will seek to improve access to timely culturally-appropriate mental health care through a variety of providers, both clinical and non-clinical addressing the physical, social, emotional and spiritual care needs of the child or youth and their family.

Regular Full-Time

Rate of Pay: $44.33 per hour - $55.41 per hour

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

**Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Nursing, or relevant healthcare field
- Current registration as a regulated health care professional in Ontario is preferred
- 5 years of recent, relevant experience working with Indigenous children and youth in mental health and/or wellness
- Palliative Care for Front Line Workers in First Nations Communities training; Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End of Life Care (LEAP) an asset
- Indigenous lived experience will be given priority
- Indigenous cultural competency training
- Awareness of Indigenous programs, resources and communities supporting Indigenous population
- Awareness of formal patient or service agreements with local Indigenous communities and organizations
- Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of the Thunder Bird Partnership First Nations Mental Wellness Continuum Framework
- Ability to support 7 grandfather teachings/values of Indigenous ways of knowing into role and embrace a wholistic approach to healing and treatment
- Ability to reach out to engage at-risk Indigenous children, youth and families with a strength-based approach that promotes competency, resiliency and self-esteem
- Actively assist youth in identifying individualized wellness plans and goals
- With input of Indigenous communities, have the ability to provide a range of outreach/referral services
- Ability to engage caregivers through existing community groups and provide education, information on opportunities related to child, youth and/or parenting
- Strong understanding of major behavioral, emotional and mental health diagnoses of Indigenous children and youth
- In-depth understanding of psychological, social and cognitive development of Indigenous youth
- Knowledge of historical and intergenerational resilience/strength that Indigenous people have experienced. Works from a trauma-informed/decolonized approach to health including the psychological, neurological, physiological, social and spiritual impact of trauma
- Knowledge of medicines, traditional healing, language, ceremonies, and cultural teachings
- Understanding of the social determinants of health and their impact on health status and well-being
- Demonstrated capacity to solve problems and to see different perspectives
- Ability to host meetings, and build/strengthen bridges between traditional and mainstream approaches to Indigenous child and youth wellness
- Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to build productive relationships with Indigenous communities including knowledge keepers and Elders
- Where necessary, assist in planning, design, and facilitation of Indigenous programs within LHSC
- Culturally sensitive professional with strong listening and coaching skills
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

**Immunization Requirements**:
Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:

- Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;
- Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
- Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
