**ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE**

This role reports to Director, Applied Genomics Centre

**SUMMARY**

The Research Technician has a supportive role for research goals of the Applied Genomics Centre (AGC). This individual will support applied research projects under the supervision and direction of the AGC Director, Laboratory and Research Coordinator, and senior research staff. Where appropriate, they may also help supervise and train student researchers working in the AGC laboratories, or in the field as applicable. They will contribute to experimental design, perform laboratory tasks, and communicate results to the Director, Associates, and industry partners.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Provide research support for the AGC’s Director, Faculty project leads, Laboratory and Research Coordinator, and senior research staff:

- Gather, organize and maintain experimental data and records in the AGC lab, and in the field when required.
- Execute experiments required for research projects, including quality control, and troubleshooting when necessary.
- Assist in preparing reports and presentations, collaboratively and under the direction of the AGC’s senior leadership.
- Provide on-site supervision and training to undergraduate student researchers, when required.
- Generate and update standard operating procedures for routine and new developments, in collaboration with the Laboratory and Research Coordinator and/or senior research staff.
- Other duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- BSc in Biology or related discipline, with a focus on genomics and/or metabolomics. Research experience is a major asset and will determine pay rate.
- Well trained in molecular biology techniques with direct experience setting up and performing PCR, qRT-PCR, Gel electrophoresis, and cDNA synthesis.
- Experienced performing DNA/RNA extractions using column or precipitation-based techniques (preferably from a range of different sources e.g. plant tissue, animal tissue, soil, food products).
- Trained in primer design (Taq man or SYBR-based) for qRT-PCR assays.
- Comfortable running and troubleshooting qRT-PCR experiments (preferably using Thermo QuantStudio platform).
- Highly organized and capable or keeping track of hundreds of biological samples, extracted DNA/RNA, and the associated data.
- Experience with library prep for Illumina NGS is an asset.
- Experience running SNP array, or performing SNP analysis is an asset.
