JOB SUMMARY & REQUIREMENTS *

The role of the Registered Dietitian Certified Diabetes Educator (RD CDE) is to support people living with diabetes and those at risk for the development of diabetes. The RD CDE has the knowledge and skills to assist patients in developing individualized self-management goals with consideration to medical complexity, medications, and technology used. This requires on-going education as new technologies, pharmacological therapies and medication/supplies coverage continue to evolve.

The Registered Dietitian (RD) Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care in accordance with the philosophy, policies, and standards of care of the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, the College of Dietitians of Ontario as well as the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) and the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).

Responsibilities include:

- Working collaboratively alongside a multidisciplinary team and Endocrinologists to provide diabetes education which includes: self-monitoring blood glucose, insulin injection technique, medication adherence, sick day management, hypoglycemia management, and dietary and lifestyle interventions.
- Collects relevant information such as medical history, social history, medications/adherence, laboratory data, blood glucose data, stage of change, etc. to develop an individualized care plan for patients.
- Keeping up to date with current technology such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, insulin, insulin pumps, non-insulin injectables, and oral medication.
- Demonstrates advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills required to assess and treat nutritionally complex patients.
- Managing oral antihyperglycemic agents and adjusting non-insulin injectable medications.
- Adjusting basal/bolus insulin therapies under the medical directive of the Endocrinology team.

**Education**:

- Registered Dietitian with a bachelor’s degree and Dieticians of Canada (DC) approved internship.
- Certified Diabetes Educator designate
- Certified Pump Trainer preferred
- Maintains membership in appropriate organization as indicated
- Membership in the Diabetes Educator section of Diabetes Canada preferred
- Current CPR an asset

**Experience**:

- 3 to 5 years of clinical experience required.
- Previous experience in adult education, patient counseling
- Minimum of 2-3 years in an interdisciplinary health care setting
- Minimum of 2-3 years previous experience in medical nutritional therapy with experience in teaching the patient with diabetes
- Sound knowledge of theory and responsibilities of profession
