The Public Safety and Security Division is comprised of the following Units:
- Policing Strategies;
- Crime Prevention;
- Public Safety Investigations;
- Corporate Security;
- Provincial Firearms Program;
- Security Programs Office; and
- Service Dog Program.
**About Our Opportunity**:
The Public Safety Advisor is responsible to provide consultative, research, and advisory services on all matters relating to public safety, including but not limited to: monitoring public safety services to ensure they comply with prescribed standards for adequate and effective service delivery in accordance with the Police Act; representing the Province on issues relating to public safety on federal/provincial/territorial committees; representing the Department of Justice at law enforcement and public safety functions; serving as liaison on interdepartmental committees; and working with policing, government and community partners to make Nova Scotia a safer place to live and work.
The Public Safety Advisor represents the Government of Nova Scotia on federal/provincial/territorial committees relating to policing, public safety, and the First Nations and Inuit Policing Program.
Part of a team of professionals, the successful applicant will play a crucial role helping ensure that the PSSD has accurate, reliable, and timely information, based on the most relevant available data and/or policies from internal and external sources.
This position reports to the Manager of Crime Prevention.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
Your main responsibility will be:
- Focused on consultations with community organizations, Public Safety Canada and First Nations communities regarding policing contracts and public safety initiatives.
- Specifically, the Advisor will focus on the First Nations Policing Program that supports the provision of policing services to over 450 First Nation and Inuit communities across Canada.
- Explore public safety initiatives to address barriers and explore opportunities to help support Indigenous communities across Nova Scotia.
- Utilize an appropriate writing skillset to prepare written briefs, including briefing notes, submissions to Executive Council, correspondence, research reports, discussion papers and proposals.
- Support Crime Prevention initiatives identified through evidence-based analysis.

- Experience working with First Nations communities
- Speaking and understanding First Nations languages
- Proficiency in French
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
