**Main Purpose and Function**
The Maintenance Technician I performs skilled maintenance and cleaning within Parks’ facilities. The position is actively responsible for a variety of functions and activities related to the preventive maintenance and repairs on the refrigeration plant, pool system and facility/facilities and provides technical direction and guidance to a number of other staff engaged in performing related work.
This position may be required to work evenings and weekends on various shifts as operationally required; including coverage at all sites.
**Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships**
The position works under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Technician III and the Community Centre Supervisor. This position provides direction and assists in the Maintenance Technician III in the supervision of Building Workers, Utility Maintenance Worker I and II’s.
**Specific Duties/Responsibilities**
- Maintains, operates, troubleshoots and repairs physical plant equipment and related systems
- Performs, supports and reviews preventative maintenance, standard operating procedures and OH&S inspections
- Acquires necessary tools, components and equipment
- Performs and assists the Maintenance Technician III in completing general maintenance and shut down and/or start up by following safety operating procedure on the refrigeration plant and pool systems
- Reports, notifies and/or communicates the need for major/minor repairs or additions to the building operation, including monitoring building security and safety.
- Checks work for conformance to schedules and technical standards.
- Ensures quality control and best practices by inspecting work in progress and upon competition
- Maintains a variety of administrative and operational records related to the work and prepares reports as required;
- Provides technical oversight, training, onboarding, direction and instruction to UMW III, II, I’s and janitorial staff
- Coordinates the work of various work teams by assisting the Maintenance Technician III in assigning, scheduling and assessing the competition of work and tasks
- Oversees the work of a group of subordinates engaged in ice making, pool operation, janitorial, building service and maintenance tasks and in the operation and maintenance of mobile and stationary equipment located within recreational facilities;
- Maintains a variety of administrative and operational records related to the work and prepares reports as required;
- Performs related duties as required.
**Minimum Qualification Requirements**
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 and courses in the technical specialty and considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Fourth Class Power Engineer Certificate or equivalent/higher
- Ability and willingness to obtain Pool Operator I & II
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used to maintain and repair ice rink, refrigeration plant, aquatic systems, building system components and related installations.
- Working knowledge of building systems and the provincial regulations governing operations.
- Basic knowledge of janitorial and grounds maintenance practices
- Ability to supervise and schedule the work of subordinates performing related work
- Ability to operate and adjust equipment and automated control systems (DDC) such as Delta and Reliable controls, make complex repairs and replace components.
- Ability to adapt work methods and estimate materials.
- Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports.
- Skill in the care and use of tools and testing equipment.
- Good sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge of MS Office software is preferred.
