**POSITION TITLE**:
Resident Companion

**REPORTS TO**:
Director of Nursing and Personal Care

The resident companion is a blend of Protective Service and Companion Care of non-direct hands-on care for the residents in compliance with the Long-Term Care Facilities Program and the policies and procedures of Saint Luke's Place. The resident companion provides services for 1 to 1 compassionate care for Residents with Dementia, Alzheimer's, Frontal Brain Injury, Schizophrenia, Stroke, etc.

Services provided by Resident Companion will not diminish or impact upon the obligations of the Home and its staff to ensure health and safety standards are maintained and care is provided in accordance with legislation, regulatory bodies, and the individual care needs of the resident.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Grade 12 education preferred
- Physically able to handle all aspects of the job (walking, standing, lifting, pushing, and pulling, including wheelchairs).
- Previous experience working with seniors with dementia, preferred.
- Certification of Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) preferred
- Recreation Therapy certification or enrollment in such a program, an asset, or Personal Support Worker Certification.
- Good organization and communication skills
- Respects the organizational chart
- Dependable, trustworthy, punctual (part time staff must be flexible for call ins.)
- Must be able to handle the mental stress of a fast-paced environment while exhibiting a "team" attitude, patience and understanding.

**MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provides services for 1 to 1 compassionate care for Residents with Dementia, Alzheimer's, Frontal Brain Injury, Schizophrenia, Stroke, etc.
- Builds rapport and includes verbal redirection and as needed physical barrier methodology
- Provide emotional care to prevent isolation with regular conversation, companionship, and personal interaction.
- Provide mental stimulation through a range of mindful activities and games to keep residents mentally stimulated and engaged
- Assist with nutrition needs such as: feeding, assisting with meal and snack to ensure adequate nutrition and wellbeing.
- Resident Companions with a Personal Support Worker Certificate will be expected to provide personal care including hygiene, toileting, dressing, bathing, bed mobility etc. Personal Support Workers providing resident companionship are expected to follow all health and safety protocols during care routines. Personal Support Workers will provide personal care as outlined in the resident individualized Plan of Care and will follow the policies outlined by Saint Luke’s Place in the provision of personal care.
- Provide therapeutic stimulation such as: simple light exercises, aroma therapy, Snoezelen, basic hygiene
- hair brushing, makeup, nail painting and hand massage - if appropriate
- Collaborate with the Behaviour Support Team to understand resident triggers and offer feedback for interventions that may be successful in the resident’s plan of care.
- Provide hourly documentation which can include:
any tracking information required by the home, and includes ALL interventions (both by home staff and companions) near misses where the resident’s decision or outside factor deters responsive behavior
- Know the fire emergency procedures and required response
- Respect the right and need for privacy, independence, integrity and friendship of residents
- Performs all duties in a safe and healthy manner
- Reports unsafe conditions and equipment
- Exercise care in use of Saint Luke’s Place equipment and residents’ belongings.
- Be regular and punctual in attendance at work.
- Complete assigned tasks and duties in a timely manner.
- Wears personal protective equipment provided by the Employer
- Observes Infection Control guidelines. Observes and works within the guidelines of the Health & Safety Program, including proper reporting of accidents and participation in ESRTW plans (WSIA).
- Supervision for residents who are an elopement risk
- Resident suicide watch
- Staff and Resident Protection for residents with uncontrolled responsive behaviours. Long term or short term.
- On demand coverage for emergency situations, including damaged doors or wander guards, medication changes, dosage interruption for anti-psychotics, Intake for residents without an adequate chart history. Long term power failure. “One off” situations where resident is acting unpredictably
