**What can I expect to do in this role?**: In this role, as a ministry expert and recognized authority on human toxicology, you will:

- provide scientific expertise for the development of human health-based environmental benchmarks (for air, soil, water or other environmental media). You will develop health-based pollution criteria and/or provide critical review of other agencies' standards, and provide expertise on human health risk assessments of hazardous contaminants in the environment.
- provide scientific expertise and advice in support of policy and program development, regulatory decisions and risk management activities, toxicological/scientific problem solving, and provision of toxicological testimony as an expert witness
- plan, coordinate and conduct projects to investigate and advise on key scientific and environmental issues related to the health risks of environmental pollution
- liaise within the ministry, with other agencies, leading jurisdictions, academia and other experts, to establish and communicate ministry scientific positions, and to keep current with new developments in environmental standards setting and human health risk assessment

Note: This position is located at 40 St. Clair Ave., Toronto, however alternate work arrangements may be available.

**How do I qualify?**:
**Mandatory**:

- Degree from a university of recognized standing in human or environmental toxicology or related scientific disciplines (e.g. pathology, pharmacology, epidemiology, human physiology, biochemistry).

**Technical expertise**:

- knowledge of human and environmental toxicology (e.g. biochemistry or biology or physiology), with relevant experience conducting scientific assessment of exposure and human toxicology of hazardous contaminants in the environment.

**Communication skills**:

- demonstrated verbal and written ability to represent and defend the ministry's standards, reports, and health risk interpretation positions in various forums as well as to explain health-based benchmarks and risk analyses in lay terms.
- written communication skills to prepare a variety of scientific/technical reports, papers and memoranda for a range of audiences, as well as plain language explanations and briefing materials on scientific topics.

**Project management and interpersonal skills**:

- proven knowledge of project management techniques and practices to scope, design, lead and/or conduct scientific studies or projects.
- demonstrated collaboration skills to effectively work in a team environment, design and undertake collaborative research projects, participate in scientific teams, broker consensus among conflicting perspectives and build relationships.

**Analytical skills**:

- analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills to resolve unique scientific problems leading to the development of human-health based and environmental standards, benchmarks, policies and regulations
