Job Description Summary

Recruits participants for the Early Development Research Group (EDRG), which is comprised of six labs in the Department of Psychology: Infant Studies Centre, Centre for Infant Cognition, Social Cognitive Development Lab, K.I.D. Studies Centre, Language Development Centre, and Centre for Cognitive Development. The recruiter approaches families with newborn infants over the phone to recruit them to participate in infant development studies ongoing at the Hospital, and to enter their data in the EDRG recruitment database so that they may be contacted for future studies ongoing at UBC. The recruiter will be expected to meet a minimum monthly target regarding the average number of families recruited daily. The recruiter also assists researchers who run newborn studies on-site at the Hospital. Additionally, the recruiter works with the EDRG Coordinator to ensure the recruitment process and potential future bookings are streamlined.

Organizational Status

Reports to the six Lab Directors and the Research Manager. Works closely with the EDRG Coordinator, the Lab Coordinators, students, post-doctoral fellows, and other research technicians.

Work Performed

Recruits participants for studies on infant development over the phone.

Interacts with Hospital staff when recruiting families for newborn studies.

Collects, enters, and coordinates information about potential participants in an existing database.

Maintains up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of the studies being carried out in the Centres. Updates protocols and manuals about recruiting at the Hospital.

Attends monthly Meetings on UBC campus.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Much of the work is performed according to clear procedures and is monitored; however, some individual initiative is required. Errors may result in loss of data, participants, or reputation; the slowing down of productivity in the laboratory; or ethics approval being delayed.

Supervision Received

The employee will be under general supervision, receiving specific instruction when new duties are assigned and when unusual problems arise. Tasks and achievement targets will be assigned by the Lab Directors and the Research Manager. All text produced by the employee will be reviewed by the Directors and by the Behavioural Ethics Review Board of UBC before it is made public.

Supervision Given

The employee may need to explain routine tasks to volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Psychology or other relevant discipline preferred. Experience working in recruitment and/or with the public - in particular, with parents, infants, and/or children - is an asset for the position. Ability to communicate in English effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese is an asset. Effective organizational skills. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to details. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure. Ability to meet achievement targets and deadlines set by directors. Ability to respect confidentiality and securely manage sensitive information. Familiarity with technology (e.g., iPad, Mac systems) is preferred.
