Counsellor

The Gander Women’s Centre is seeking a counsellor to provide support to women impacted by Gender Based Violence (GBV). The counsellor will work individually with clients, coordinate and facilitate support groups and assist with referrals to community-based services. While providing ongoing support, the counsellor will offer counselling to clients impacted by GBV and help provide increased access to a range of services, and resources while assisting with decision making in a consistent, friendly and safe environment.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Conduct intake during our drop-in counselling program
Provide individual and family counselling to women and gender diverse individuals impacted by GBV
Build rapport and provide ongoing support and services to participants to ensure they are receiving proper care and treatment in the services they require
Maintain confidentiality
Respond to participant-related requests (such as registering for services, discussing service options, requesting information, providing on-site counselling)
Provide referrals to supportive services
Outreach to community and governmental services
Work collaboratively with an inter-professional team in a non-profit women’s organization
Maintain accurate case notes and records
Collect and submit statistics as requested by funding body
Report to the Executive Director of the Gander Women’s Centre
Other duties as required
**Qualifications**
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology or Social Work from an accredited university and/or equivalent experience
Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Persons Sector Check
Experience providing counselling and support to survivors of GBV
Experience facilitating support groups
Knowledge of feminist theory, GBV, trauma informed practice and strengths-based approach to practice
A working knowledge of community resources and experience working in community-based organizations
Experience in system navigation
Strong relationship building skills
Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills
**Hours of Work**
Counsellor will be required to work a minimum of 1.5 days a week during working hours (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the Gander Women’s Centre. The remaining scheduled counselling hours will be flexible and counsellor can choose the hours based around their existing schedule (evening, weekends, days) upon approval from the Executive Director
**Salary**
The salary for this position is $38 an hour for 25 hours a week with the possibility of extension of hours and/or hourly rate
