At VIA HFR, we are re-imagining passenger rail service on behalf of the Government of Canada Our goal is to create a new sustainable train network that that will run faster, more often and will be more reliable between Toronto and Québec City. The HFR project is Canada's largest infrastructure project in generations.
Are you ready to take on a stimulating and impactful challenge? Look no further: VIA HFR is looking for a Director, Safety. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director to oversee the safety activities within the operations and maintenance division of the Project Management Office.
**The role**
**The responsibilities**
- Oversee the development and implementation of safety strategies, policies, and procedures for the HFR project during the co-development phase, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and industry best practices.
- Develop and implement safety programs and procedures.
- Collaborate with regulatory bodies and stakeholders to enhance safety practices.
- Develop and implement a process to identify and manage safety hazards and risks and monitor mitigation efforts.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with safety regulations, standards, and reporting requirements from regulatory agencies.
- Prepare progress reports, technical documentation, and presentations for project stakeholders, including executive leadership, investors, and regulatory authorities
**The requirements**
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, transportation management, occupational health and safety, or a related field. A master's degree or higher in a relevant field could be beneficial.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification (Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec) is a plus.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in safety management, preferably in the rail or transportation industry.
- Experience in developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and standards.
- Knowledge of Transport Canada regulations, rules, and standards, Commission des Normes, de l’Équité et de la Santé/Sécurité au Travail (CNESST) standards, and industry best practices.
- Good working knowledge of U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration regulations and the American Public Transportation Association standards is desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Being fluent in both Canadian official languages is desirable.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
