**School Summary**

Vancouver Talmud Torah (VTT), a community Jewish day school serving a student body from ages 3 to 13, is currently recruiting a second school counsellor to begin in the 2023 school year.

At VTT, we provide a stimulating and challenging educational environment infused with meaningful learning experiences. Our school serves families from a diverse range of Jewish backgrounds and religious practices. We are Western Canada's largest Jewish community day school and have more than 100 years of experience and close to 500 students.

**Position Summary**

The role of School Counselor is an essential role that focuses on three main portfolios within the school:

- 1:1 or small group counselling
- Socio-emotional Learning
- Student Leadership

A school counsellor provides short-term counselling and educational programs to students at VTT. The role comprises four major areas: counselling, consultation, coordination and education. This individual works with administration, teachers, parents, students and other community agencies to support the development and well-being of students. VTT counsellors help resolve issues that arise from student choices using positive and collaborative behavioural solutions and a foundational relationship forged through student life programming. Their approach will be reinforced by the skills taught through the social-emotional learning curriculum.

**Overview of Counselling Responsibilities**:

- Responsible for short-term counselling of individual students in regards to a range of issues (academic concerns, diverse learning styles, social-emotional concerns, etc.).
- Provide crisis counselling/intervention, and be available in the event of a crisis situation.
- Provide preventative, developmental, remedial and intervention services and programs and facilitate referrals to community resources and support services.
- Offer counselling, school-based consultation, coordination and education.
- Facilitate lunchtime groups focusing on social skill acquisition, relationship building, etc. according to the needs of the student body.
- Consult and plan collaboratively with students, educators, administration in planning goals and effective strategies to promote the education, social, emotional development of students.
- As a member of the school-based Special Education team, assists in the access and co-ordination of school services and other community services for students and families.
- Facilitate group counselling sessions.
- Ability to utilise excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and organisational skills.
- Supports the mission, vision and values of the school.

**Supporting Student Leadership Role**:
This position reports to the Principals of Primary and Intermediate grades (SK to Gr 3; Gr 4-7) and works as a team with the other school counsellor and the Educational Leadership team under the direction of the Head of School.
- Instructional Leadership_
- Work in partnership with the school counselling team to facilitate, develop and oversee the SEL programming and opportunities in SK- Grade 7;
- Improve faculty’s understanding and skills in supporting SEL and mental health
- Curate, maintain and distribute research-based information related to SEL and mental health topics;
- Ensure the school’s SEL offerings are aligned with the BC Ministry of Education curriculum with a focus on the Curricular and Core Competencies;
- Support the design and implementation of the SEL curriculum, standards, instruction and student assessment;
- Mentor and coach the faculty in the implementation of SEL;
- Follow and support the introduction of current trends in SEL and mental health;
- Plan and participate in meaningful professional development, with the purpose of improving our SEL offerings and support of mental well-being.
- Educational Management and Programming_
- Coordinate and assist in dissemination of SEL programs and opportunities;
- Work collaboratively to design a framework to support positive behaviours;
- Build the capacity of the staff and schools to implement SEL programs and approaches;
- Organise, plan and facilitate meetings with faculty members;
- Lead and facilitate presentations and workshops pertaining to SEL and mental health;
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure the school’s standards, policies, and procedures are met;
