The Dugout Drop In Centre - Summary of Position

Job Title: Drop In Centre Cook

The Dugout is a nondenominational charitable organisation serving residents of Vancouver 's Downtown Eastside. We offer a low-barrier community living room: a place where people can come to enjoy a free snack and a coffee away from the street or from the isolation that many in the neighbourhood experience.

In addition to operating and maintaining the physical drop-in space, employees of The Dugout operate a number of outreach programs serving community members of the Downtown Eastside including:
1) Daily Morning Soup and Coffee, operating daily 7 days per week.

2) Snack and Baked Good Service available to community members throughout the day.

3) Grocery Redistribution operating twice weekly, redirecting donated grocery items to community members.

4) Daily AA Meetings, operating 365 days per year

Position and Responsibilities

Food Preparation and Serving

Preparing soup and coffee for a morning breakfast service;
Chopping & prepping vegetables and fruit as needed for soup and snack service.

Supervising the soup line and ensuring on-time delivery of service; o Sorting donated bread, grocery, produce, dairy items as they are received to ensure freshness and limits of expiry for redistribution to community members;
Maintaining cleanliness of kitchen and public drop in areas; o Packaging produce and other grocery items for a weekly grocery program;
Ensuring proper stock rotation following FIFO procedures for bread, groceries, dry stock and other food donations;
Drop In Centre Assistance

Opening and closing the centre as a keyholder;
Assisting and supervising volunteers as needed with daily operations;
Ensuring The Dugout is kept clean, tidy and safe for all attendeess;
THE DUGOUT ScheduleA

Supporting a welcoming and Inclusive environment;
Practising non-violent conflict resolution for conflicts that arise;
Maintaining the security of the drop-in, including keeping unauthorised people from behind the serving and storage areas, and preventing theft and damage of drop-in property;
Communicating regularly with Drop In Supervisor regarding repairs to be made and any concerns that arise during daily service.

Experience

Minimum 2 years combined work or volunteer experience in food service and/or community social work.

Volunteer or Work Experience with individuals in crisis situations, at risk communities, and vulnerable individuals.

FoodSafe Level 1 required.

First Aid / CPRC certificate is considered an asset.

Training in Nonviolent Conflict Resolution is considered an asset.

Your salary as Drop In Centre Cook is $17.43/hour to be paid bi-weekly.

Hours of Work

Subject to the needs of the Dugout, your hours of work will be 14 hours per week. You may at times be asked to provide further coverage outside of these regular hours if possible.
