The City of New Westminster has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, customer service and safety-focused leader to join our Parks and Recreation team. Reporting to the Manager, Parks Operations and Services, the Superintendent, Parks Operations is accountable for planning and directing the daily operations related to City-wide horticultural operations, including gardens, landscaped areas, greenhouse operations and water systems such as drinking fountains, spray parks and irrigation.
**Responsibilities include**:
- Managing the daily operations of the Horticulture, Greenhouse, Irrigation and Park Works Yard.
- Overseeing and supervising the work of staff engaged in a variety of horticulture activities, maintenance and operation of parks irrigation, spray parks, drinking fountain, water play feature systems and controls.
- Investigating and responding to internal and external requests, equipment/system problems, disputes and other public complaints and dispatching staff to respond to emergency events.
- Participating in the development of operating and capital budgets, monitoring budgets and expenditures, and assisting with the development of capital asset replacement plans.
- Participating in the planning and coordinating of capital construction and projects.
- Maintaining a variety of records such as inventories of park assets, equipment and supplies, and GIS infrastructure maps
- Administrative duties including report preparation, accounts payable and financial processes related to the areas of accountability, purchasing equipment, supplies, maintenance and other maintenance and repair records.
- Coordinating and supervising external contractors in the provision of landscape construction initiatives.
- Liaising with a variety of City departments and external agencies.
**Key education, experience and skill requirements include**:
- Relevant post-secondary education in horticulture and 5 years of related supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience as deemed suitable by the employer.
- Certified Irrigation Designer and/or ISA Arborist certifications required.
- Thorough knowledge of the, policies, local and provincial bylaws, acts and regulations, and procedures related to the work within a municipal setting, including WorkSafe BC requirements and legislation.
- Experience working with and developing maintenance management and job costing systems.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in order to maintain effective working relationships with internal/external agencies and the public and to resolve issues in a professional manner.
- Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills to coordinate and prioritize the allocation of resources across a variety of services.
- Ability to lead, motivate and inspire a diverse team of unionized staff and provide supervision, coaching, maintain workflow, review staffing levels, timekeeping, scheduling, and manage performance.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- A valid B.C. driver’s license.
