**Role**:
Reporting to the Bridge Manager, the Regional Environmental Coordinator (REC) provides direction, advice and support regarding environmental matters related to Bridge, Construction, Operations, Properties and Infrastructure project management, planning, design, construction and maintenance.

The incumbent ensures that regional activities in the various districts comply with environmental legislation, conditions of regulatory approvals and departmental environmental policy. This is achieved through interaction with department staff, consultants and contractors, regulatory agencies as well as special interest groups. The position is also responsible for implementing and influencing standards and procedures, policy development, education of staff and private sector partners as well as management of consultants.

**The main responsibilities of Environmental Coordinator are (but not limited to)**:

- Providing leadership, direction and technical advice to Delivery Services staff and consultants throughout the planning, design, construction and operational phases of bridge construction, infrastructure, properties and operations sections’ projects to ensure compliance with relevant provincial and federal environmental legislation
- Coordinating the regional implementation of the Environmental Management System programs in order to ensure projects meet environmental requirements
- Managing regional environmental and contaminated sites consulting agreements to ensure the appropriate environmental services are delivered on time and on budget

**Qualifications**:
Required:

- Bachelor’s degree in Biological or Environmental Sciences or equivalent supplemented by 4 years of experience working with the review of environmental regulations and legislations
- Knowledge of Federal and Provincial environmental legislations considered a strong asset
- Eligibility for membership with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists or the Alberta Institute of Agrologists is required

**Equivalency**: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

**Desired**:

- Familiarity with aquatic and land-based ecosystems as well as regional species
- Knowledge of applied mitigation measures
- Experience completing site inspections and managing contaminated sites
- Strong working knowledge of construction, maintenance work as well as erosion and sediment control
- Excellent internal and external stakeholder engagement
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
