Chee Mamuk is a self-determining Indigenous program situated within the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), under the umbrella of the Provincial Health Services Authority. The term Chee Mamuk is Chinook jargon meaning ‘new work’. Rooted in strengths-based approaches, Chee Mamuk works in relationship with Indigenous communities, organization and individuals in various traditional, ancestral and unceded territories across the province. Chee Mamuk envisions and works in a way whereby traditional health knowledge(s) and sciences are bridged and equalized to foster holistic well-being for Indigenous people. Our team members work from different territories throughout BC.

Legacies of colonialism and ongoing racism contribute to the disproportionate health burden and marginalization faced by Indigenous Communities. The health system isn't working for many Indigenous people today. Repairing trust and building relationships is a core foundation for our work. We assist in connecting people to their Indigenous identities through culture as a root of health and well-being.

Functions: This educator role will assist to share, learn with and teach participants about traditional and cultural foods and medicine, and preparation and preservation of traditional foods as an essential component of wellness and disease prevention. This role will work with Community members to share approaches to gather and prepare traditional foods and medicines that may have been lost due to broader effects of colonization and support Community approaches to food sovereignty and security. This role will allow Chee Mamuk to bring traditional foods into our trainings, as food is an integral part of culture and connecting with Community members.

The Educator/Facilitator’s key responsibilities are:

- Contacting Aboriginal organizations and communities across BC to promote, plan, arrange and facilitate/provide culturally appropriate, community based STI/HIV awareness, education and training events within the communities or organization;
- Facilitate community based STI/HIV needs assessments;
- Ensuring evaluation of Chee Mamuk program services and providing evaluation assistance for other community based STI/HIV programs/services;
- Representing Chee Mamuk at professional development sessions and on advisory committees with Chee Mamuk partners;
- Preparing monthly work plans and service reports; assist Program Manager in other duties as required.

What you have:

- Bachelor’s Degree in a health or education related discipline from a recognized program.
- Two (2) years recent related experience providing training, preferably with one (1) year experience teaching with Aboriginal people & communities.
- Experience working with Aboriginal communities and working with rural, isolated, and remote communities.
- Ability to travel extensively and willing to work weekends/evenings and in adverse conditions. (BC Driver’s License is preferred)
- Must have aboriginal ancestry

What you are able to do and demonstrate:

- Broad knowledge and experience of instructional methods, curriculum design and development techniques.
- Broad knowledge of STI/HIV.
- Broad knowledge of Aboriginal communities’ social, historical, jurisdictional, and cultural issues, and Aboriginal views on health/disease/sexuality/wellness.
- Broad knowledge of population health and social determinants of health theory.
- Broad knowledge of BC Aboriginal communities, organizations, and services.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability in large and small group facilitation and public speaking and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, to problem solve, and to deal effectively with conflict situations.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and be self-motivated.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
- Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
