At Sinai Health, we care, create possibilities and offer hope. We are looking for an experienced safety professional to join its Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) team. Working under the leadership of the Manager, Occupational Safety, and working together with the other Safety Specialists, the role of the Safety Specialist - Generalist supports, develops and implements OHS policies and programs for all Sinai Health locations. Examples of these policies and programs include: Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Workplace Violence Prevention, Occupational Hygiene (air quality, mould, asbestos, heat/cold stress, vibration, radiation and noise), WHMIS, Confined Spaces, Contractor Safety Management, Anaesthetic Gases, Antineoplastic Agents, Slips/Trips/Falls Prevention, Sharps Injury Prevention, and Ergonomics. This position will play a key role in coordinating, developing, and implementing departmental goals and projects.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Gains a thorough understanding of all operational environments and builds relationships with all internal and external stakeholders; participates in related committees as required
- Conducts in-depth research to support issue resolution, analyze data, and create reports
- Develops end user documentation and provides support and training for departments or team members regarding policies and procedures
- Monitors, analyzes, and keeps apprised of new or revised legislation as well as best practices to maintain and enhance current health and safety management system operational plans, policies, and procedures; anticipates the impact of changes on the organization
- Provides input into SH wide changes to promote compliance with OH&S law and move beyond compliance
- Develops, communicates, and implements occupational health and safety programs and audits; Evaluates programs and uses audit results to revise existing programs ensuring compliance with legislative requirements
- Shares best practices within the health care community and other occupational sectors
- Represents SH when interacting with government representatives and enforcement agencies, such as the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, Public Health Ontario, and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board; Coordinates appropriate responses on behalf of the organization
- Provides core occupational hygiene and safety services including hazard risk assessments. Risk assessments can include but are not limited to: workplace violence risk assessments, air sampling, noise monitoring, spill and emergency response, selection and use of personal protective equipment, occupational health and safety training, etc
- Supports the Ergonomics Program by conducting physical demands analysis, completing workplace ergonomics assessments, and providing managers with required support during MSH incidents investigations to identify corrective measures to prevent incidents
- Proactively identifies workplace hazards such as biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic, and safety issues; evaluates potential staff exposure assess risk to both staff and others within the organization; assesses the need for interventions to comply with occupational health, safety or environmental laws and best practices in workplace safety; determines control measures to eliminate or minimize the risk to staff and the organization
- Ensures evidence-based solutions are implemented to address hazards and advance occupational health and safety best practices (e.g. the implementation of engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation, laboratory safety, waste management, ergonomic interventions, etc.)
- In collaboration with the Safety Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, annually review the elements of SH’s occupational health and safety programs and management systems in comparison to legislative requirements and external guidelines; recommends changes to the programs or systems, as required
- Participates in education related to the potential or actual hazards in the workplace and the precautions that must be followed to protect health and safety
- Promptly reports all work-related incidents to the leadership team and participates in the investigation of incidents to assist SH with identifying appropriate action to prevent a recurrence
