**Position**:Parenting Support Worker

Jessie’s - The June Callwood Centre for Young Women (Jessie’s) is a multi-service, drop-in, resource centre for pregnant young women, young parents, and their children. Jessie’s works to include a broad spectrum of services addressing issues related to the social determinants of health. Jessie’s operates from a feminist perspective and is a pro-choice organization that supports a woman’s right to make choices about their sexual health and pregnancy options.

Jessie’s staff and participants (clients) come from diverse cultures and sexual orientations. Having a rich history in working with diverse populations is fundamental to this role.

The Parenting Support Worker is responsible for providing one-to-one support with participants and their children around issues of parenting, attachment, and child development. They oversee volunteers, students and relief staff and supports the Infant-Child Workers in the Parent-Child Centre as needed. The Parenting Support Worker reports to the Director of Programs & Operations.

**Responsibilities**:
1. One-to-One Support with Parents:

- Offer individual support, information, and referral services to young parents, with a focus on infant mental health and attachment theories.
- Provide information and referral services to parents, addressing concerns related to child growth and development, parent-child relationships, parenting roles, discipline, health, nutrition, and safety.
- Serve as a positive role model to parents and maintain respectful, age-appropriate interactions with children.
- Encourage the development of peer support networks among participants by facilitating introductions, promoting information exchange, and offering guidance and support within the Parent-Child Centre.

2. Group Facilitation:

- Lead weekly parenting group sessions and/or monthly parenting workshops.
- Create a safe and supportive environment for young parents to share experiences, concerns, and insights.
- Utilize best practices in group facilitation to foster learning and mutual support among participants.

3. Infant Mental Health and Attachment Theories:

- Provide insights and strategies for promoting healthy emotional development in infants and young children.

4. ASQ-3 Assessment:

- Support parents to understand child development milestones using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3).
- Administer and score ASQ-3 assessments for participants' children.
- Offer follow-up sessions and activities tailored to address developmental needs and provide appropriate timely referrals and interventions.

5. Children's Aid Society (CAS) Access Visits:

- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate Children's Aid Society (CAS) access visits in consultation with case workers and your direct supervisor.
- Coordinate both internally and externally with CAS to determine the suitability of providing access visits at the centre.
- Implement a plan of action for service involving all parties concerned.
- Ensure the completion of appropriate documentation for CAS access visits.

6. School Program:

- Handle registration, orientation, and attendance support for school program participants.
- Provide one-on-one assistance in implementing educational service plans for students.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, offering support as required.
- Assist in planning and join classroom field trips and end-of-year celebrations.

7. Meetings and Coordination:

- Actively participate in meetings as required to discuss the progress of the parenting support program, collaborate with colleagues, and provide updates on CAS access visits and school program activities.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, you should meet the following qualifications:

- A degree or diploma in Child and Youth Work, Social Services, Child Development, or a relevant field of study.
- 3-5 years of experience working with youth, young parents, and children, ideally in a supportive or educational capacity.
- A solid foundation in child development, attachment theories, and practical knowledge of nurturing children.
- Trained or experienced in using ASQ®-3 and ASQ®:SE-2 assessment tools to evaluate child development and social-emotional skills.

Skills and Abilities:

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Empathy and patience when working with young parents and children.
- Ability to create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for program participants.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to plan and execute group sessions, individual follow-ups, CAS access visits, school program activities, support Parent-Child Centre, and individual support services.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to carry and hold children, up to 40 lb.
