Appeals and litigation involve complex legal and accounting issues across a variety of businesses and industries, and outcomes on appeal can significantly affect the tax base.

An Appeals Officer must be able to assimilate complex facts, assess the merits of legal arguments, weigh the evidentiary value of material and analyze applicable legislation. Upon completion of the review process, the Appeals Officer prepares a written recommendation to the minister on the disposition of each appeal. The Appeals Officer regularly interacts with taxpayers, their professional advisors and the assessing sections of the ministry.

**Job Requirements**:

- Degree in law and several years’ experience working in a legal, business, policy and/or legislative environment. **Alternatively**,
- a combination of a post-graduate university degree (MBA, MPA or equivalent) and several years’ experience working in a field which required knowledge of business and industry practices, legal documents and the ability to interpret legislation, **or**:

- a combination of a university degree and extensive experience working in a field which required knowledge of business and industry practices, legal documents and the ability to interpret legislation.
- Experience researching and interpreting legislation.
- Experience analyzing complex legal, factual or business issues.
