Midwest is a pipeline construction contractor based in Spruce Grove, AB and serves the Oil & Gas Industry in Western Canada. Construction projects are executed in all types of terrain and locations, with varying diameter, length, and complexity. Midwest’s focus is on safety, quality, and relationships with employees, Clients, and vendors.
The Human Resources Generalist position is a full-time employee position reporting to the Director of Operations and has accountability for successful human resources management including recruitment, onboarding, training, development, performance management, and administration of compensation and benefits. This role is an integral member of the Midwest Management Team, helping to establish the Company as a leader in the pipeline construction industry through execution excellence and collaborative relationships.
**Key Roles & Responsibilities (not limited to)**:
- **Strategy, Vision & Leadership**:_
- Ensuring that the values of the Company are communicated throughout the organization.
- Efficient communication with respect to Human Resource (HR) matters throughout the company.
- Support the implementation of Company-wide process and procedure initiatives.
- Demonstrate a positive and cooperative attitude (lead by example).
- Represent the organization in a professional manner.
- **General Duties**:_
- Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy.
- Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable federal and provincial HR requirements.
- Enforce management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending HR policies and procedures.
- Retain historical HR records by designing and maintaining a filing and retrieval system and keeping past and current records.
- Help organization enhance employee relations.
- Travel to project work site locations as required to support personnel.
- Maintain confidentiality in all undertakings.
- **Staffing & Recruiting**:_
- Maintain job requirements and job descriptions for all positions.
- Research industry wages and salaries for various staff and project positions.
- Support the organization’s staff by establishing job postings, screening applicants, and organizing interviews.
- Conduct and analyze exit interviews and make actionable recommendations based on data gathered.
- **Union Relationship Management**:_
- Participate in the union collective agreement negotiations.
- Provide research on industry wage trends and comparison studies on burdens.
- Arrange and participate in Pre-Job Conference Report Meeting with the union for new projects.
- Manage any grievances raised by the union or union members.
- Ensure union provided training meets the needs of the workforce for project execution.
- Training & Development:_
- Create and manage a performance appraisal system that drives effective development.
- Assess training needs and available training programs.
- Arrange and coordinate seminars, workshops, and conferences based on each department’s needs.
- Manage the onboarding process for employees and contractors (Direct Service Providers).
- **Employee Wellness & Safety**:_
- Administer employee benefits including life, health, dental and disability insurance, worker’s compensation, and Group Registered Savings Plan.
- Act as primary Company contact for all Drug and Alcohol Testing service provider.
- Company liaison for union Substance Abuse Program (SAP); maintain confidentiality for all personnel returning to work on SAP.
- Nurture a positive working environment.
- Schedule and conduct job evaluations and take action to correct any areas for improvement.
- Bridge management and employee relations by addressing demands, grievances, or other issues.
- Lead and/or conduct investigations into reports of violence, harassment and discrimination including the development and provision of findings and recommendations.
- **General Office Management**:_
- Coordinate corporate office events such as Christmas Parties.
- Manage front reception and stationery/supplies orders.
- Support senior-level Company staff with various items including document preparation/updates (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), hotel reservations, and expense reports.
**Qualifications/Key Competencies**:
- Licensing or certification in Human Resources Management or a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Well versed in Employment Standards legislation in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
- A minimum of five years of direct work experience managing HR, labour relations, compensation and employee benefit programs is required.
- Experience working with a union affiliated company is considered an asset.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Able to multi-task, set priorities, meet deadlines, and provide regular progress reports.
- Ability to develop and manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the Company.
