Precision/cnc Machinist

Overview:
The Faculty of Science supports an innovative research and teaching enterprise through facilities such as Science Technical Services. STS department is comprised of; an electronic shop, machine shop and vacuum pump shop. STS is a critical organization for the Faculty of Science with in-house expertise to design, fabricate and repair parts and equipment for research and teaching. The primary purpose of Precision/CNC Machinist is to function as a machinist engaged in the design, machining, fabricating and repair of equipment for research and educational purposes.
**Responsibilities**:
General Operational Duties
- Daily recording of time spent
- Noting inventory items and miscellaneous shop supplies to be re-ordered
- Maintaining order of the workstation, shop and storeroom
- Training as required
- Miscellaneous tasks as assigned
Machinery and Shop Functionality and Safety
- Regular inspection of machinery and shop equipment to ensure precise, correct and safe performance
- Alerting Lead Hand and/or Manager to any deficiencies
- Performing repairs/ maintenance as required
Fabrication and Manufacturing
- Using various welding, sheet metal, woodworking and metal working machines and techniques to design, create, modify and repair all manner of items as required by faculty, staff and students for research and teaching
- Ability to work from mechanical drawings, client specifications, and oral or written instructions
- Ability to exercise judgement in determining the techniques and methods used
Qualifications:
- High school diploma and Certificate of Qualifications in one of the following: General Machinist, Mould Maker, Tool and Die Maker
- Demonstrated experience with a broad spectrum of the metalworking machinery and suite of skills applicable to the machining / fabricating trades
- Established experience programming and operating CNC machine tools in combination with expertise using the machine relevant and current version of applicable software
- Proven experience in conventional machining
- Excellent client service and communication skills, applicable to diverse groups including students, staff and faculty members
- Demonstrated organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Required: Machining; conventional mill and lathe, as well as CNC mill and lathe
- Considered an asset: soldering, sheet metal working, welding, Mastercam® (3D), experience in mechanical repairs to various types of equipment and instruments and vacuum testing. Familiarity with machining a range of materials; copper, titanium, ceramic, etc.
