**Neurologist (Stroke)**

**Description**

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are looking for an academic neurologist for our Stroke Neurology program.

The Division of Neurology has 34 part-time and full-time members and is renowned for the delivery of outstanding care. The Division is recognized internationally for its programs with a focus on neuromuscular, MS, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy, and stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of basic and clinical research skills including epidemiology, ethics, translational research, and trial design.

Opportunities exist through the Department of Medicine Department of Innovation in Medical Education for fostering educational skills, pursuing educational research, and participating in administrative educational roles in the Division of Neurology.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits, and over one million outpatient visits annually.

Groundbreaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks as the 5th best medical doctoral university in Canada, 3rd in medical/science research grants and 6th in total research funding (2024 MacLeans). The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world and the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with affiliated hospitals and research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from the uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine. Together, these remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty.

**Responsibilities**

The Ottawa Hospital sees approximately 1200 stroke codes per year. It is supported by a leading interventional neuroradiology service. Close ties are also maintained with neurosurgery and vascular surgery. The Neurovascular Unit is responsible for the care of up to 15 complex neurovascular patients through hyperacute care and subacute stroke management. This service is supported by neurology residents and exposes regular rotating residents in disciplines such as emergency medicine to stroke care.

Outpatient services are conducted through the Stroke Prevention Clinic which sees approximately 2000 patients per year. This clinic is supported by nurses and administrators with expedited access to neurovascular imaging and cardiac testing.

Working under the general direction of the Head of the Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa, the incumbent will be expected to participate in outpatient stroke care through the Stroke Prevention Clinic; rotate on the Neurovascular Unit; participate in Ottawa Stroke Program research trials and academic activities; teach medical students, residents, and fellows in outpatient and inpatient settings; and, participate in the Stroke on-call rotation on a regular basis.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
