**Coquitlam River Sockeye Salmon Smolt Enumeration Project Technician - Job Description**

**Position Title**:
Fisheries Technician

**Hours and Location**:
Maximum of 8 hours per day Monday to Sunday - onsite (40 hours per week)

**Fisheries Technician Position Summary**:
We are hiring for temporary hourly fisheries technician positions on the **_Coquitlam River Sockeye Salmon Smolt Enumeration Study_**. The study will run from approximately mid-April to mid-June 2024. LGL Limited biologists will be managing the work and will provide hands-on training for the position.

**Responsibilities and Accountabilities**:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Minimum of two site visits daily at the rotary screw trap (RST) capture site just below the Coquitlam Dam on the Coquitlam River, inside the Metro Vancouver Coquitlam Gate.
2. Collect and record biological and other data:
a. Catch enumeration and species identification;
b. Subsample biometrics (e.g., weight, length measurements, scale sampling for age);
c. Marking of juvenile Sockeye Salmon with fin clips;
d. Monitoring for fin clip returns;
e. Water quality and atmospheric measurements.

3. Releasing marked fish upstream.
4. Photo documentation of catch, action shots, and study site.
5. Gear maintenance, including cleaning the RST drum daily, and tent/processing station.
6. Daily inspection of RST, mounting, and cabling system.
7. Comply with all Health and Safety requirements outlined in the project safety management plan.

The list of duties and responsibilities described above is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded/modified from time to time as required by the organization’s needs.

**Knowledge Skills and Abilities**:
Previous fisheries technician experience is helpful but not necessary. LGL biologists will provide hands-on training. The technicians will require Standard First Aid (Level 1) and swift water technician certifications, as well as WHMIS; these courses will be funded through the contract prior to the field work. A valid driver’s license is an asset as one of the two team crew will require a driver’s license to drive to and from site daily.

**Employment Conditions**:
This is a field work position. Work may occur in adverse weather conditions and will occur in and near the river, potentially in high water conditions. The position includes physical labour such as lifting buckets of water and other heavy objects.

**Personal Protective Equipment**:
LGL Limited will supply all required PPE for the project with the exception of footwear (waders will be supplied). Technicians are responsible for their own rain gear and other weather protection.
