Environmental Inspector (Pipelines)

THE ROLE

Environmental inspection of pipeline construction and integrity dig projects
Monitor compliance with applicable environmental requirements and commitments relevant to pipeline construction and operations
Advise construction personnel on major decisions such as weather shutdowns or courses of action to deal with unexpected environmental conditions
Act as a liaison with local, provincial, and federal regulatory agencies
Monitor the implementation of Environmental Protection Plans (EPP) and Environmental Management Plans (EMP) during construction activities
Recommend best practices and mitigation measures to manage environmental concerns during construction
Monitor topsoil stripping, topsoil replacement, and seeding
Recommend erosion and sediment control measures and monitor installation
Oversee watercourse or waterbody crossings, ensuring compliance with project requirements and regulatory conditions
Conduct water quality sampling and turbidity monitoring during dewatering and waterbody crossing activities
Monitor water diversions and withdrawals
Conduct wildlife surveys, migratory and breeding bird/nest surveys, and amphibian salvages
Perform equipment inspections for fluid leaks and assist with spill prevention and response
Monitor environmental aspects of other pipeline activities such as hydrostatic test dewatering, hydrovac operations and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) waste management ensuring adherence to various regulatory requirements
Prepare daily inspection reports, environmental summaries, and environmental post-construction reports
Attend project and safety meetings

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

B.Sc. or technical diploma in biology, forestry, agriculture, environmental science, or related similar
Relevant professional designation is an asset (e.g., RPBio, P.Biol, P.Ag)
Pipeline construction knowledge and experience
Thorough understanding of applicable provincial and federal environmental legislation, regulations, and policies to ensure project-specific compliance
Experience conducting fish salvages, water quality monitoring, pre-construction bird and nest surveys, and amphibian salvages
Adept in the operation and maintenance of required field equipment
Ability to identify and mitigate issues rapidly to ensure compliance within an active construction work environment
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, contractors, agencies, and co-workers
Proven ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
Able to do shift work out of town
Physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions
Valid driver's license from a Canadian province or Territory acceptable for driving alone and with passengers in a work setting
