**POSITION TITLE**:_**Custodian**_

To ensure a safe and healthy environment for the members, volunteers and public who enter the buildings of the Guelph Police Service. To assist in the provision of a preventive maintenance program with respect to the building, grounds and equipment.

**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Building and Grounds Maintenance**:
Clean the interior and exterior of the buildings on a regular schedule. Clean and disinfect washrooms and cell areas, with special attention paid to potential or identified biohazards. Clean the practice range to provide a safe environment for officers to train. Maintain grounds (e.g. mow grass, water plants, trim shrubs). Ensure walkways, ramps and doorways are clear, accessible and safe for employees, volunteers and the public (includes snow removal in the winter, as necessary). Sort garbage for recycling and prepare for collection. Ensure confidential information is processed according to legislative and GPS policy requirements.

**Equipment repair**:
Implement preventative maintenance programs on all custodial and building infrastructure equipment (e.g. generator, electrical and mechanical systems). Regularly change filters for heating/cooling systems throughout the building. Perform minor repairs to building, furniture and equipment, as required. Respond to requests from members for assistance or repairs in their work areas.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent
- 1-2 years previous work experience
- Strong oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and time management skills
- Proven ability to deal with multiple and competing demands for time and attention
- Knowledge of building equipment and machinery, including operation, maintenance and repair; building construction; building materials and supplies
- Familiar with gardening and landscaping, and the safe operation of outside maintenance equipment and tools
- Familiar with the safe operation of cleaning equipment, electric power tools and other small hand tools

**WORKING ENVIRONMENT**:

- Indoor (climate controlled) and outdoor areas
- Extensive standing, walking and climbing (stairs and ladders)
- Exposure to cleaning solvents and chemicals, and potential for exposure to biohazards
- Heavy lifting (40+lbs)
- Hours of work vary and may require some extended shifts to meet multiple deadlines
- Some local travel may be required (between Clair Road Emergency Services Centre and headquarters)
